    Nuclear Fall Out

This is a fictional short story that I wrote.

    Day 1:

Hello, my name Jason Wells, and I live or lived in Smallstown. Smallstown is, or was a quaint little town where everyone knew everyone, in fact how much everyone knew everyone was a bit eerie if you ask me. Smallstown was a self-dependent town that produced its own power and pumped its own water, facilities of which I ran both. I was Smallstown chief engineer; I ran the nuclear power plant, maintained the water pumps, and even designed most of the buildings in downtown Smallstown. One of my closest friends is Randal T. Watts. Randal and I designed the nuclear power plant together. Sadly, at 11:45, we both watched are biggest project melt into pieces when an operator of reactor number 6 was drunk on the job. I can still remember hiring the poor Dr. Gerard Fleming, he was one of the very few that was not born in Smallstown, apparently where he came from he taught at some big college, oh I forget the name, Hayerd, Hared, Harvard, or something like that. We people from Smallstown don't pay much attention to the rest of the Country, and the rest of the Country doesn't pay that much attention to us, that is why Dr. Fleming knew he had to come here when he was run out of town for indecent behavior while under the influence. My mother always said I was too forgiving, and to accepting. Maybe she is right, I shouldn't have hired him. I should have known better. Randal can see the pain in my face, the disgust I have with myself, the sorrow and the guilt. "HEY! Now is not the time for beating yourself up! I built a huge fallout shelter in case something like this would happen." –Randal. He was right, I must start to right my wrong by saving as many people as possible. Randy is a very resourceful man, not only is he wealthy, he has a lot of knowledge on just about everything.

    Day 2:

I title this day 2 even though I have yet to sleep it is officially the second day of the disaster. 12:00 am April 27th. Randy and I must make the hardest decision in are life, we must decide who dies, and who lives. Randy and I must pick the town's most resourceful people; people who can help each other survive. "Remember Jason, we need people who can build, grow, and lead. I think that Danny Donne kid would be a good candidate, he sells food down by the market." States Randy I agreed so we added him to the very selective list of two other people. I think that we need Jesse Schmitt, she is pregnant and it would be a shame if that baby didn't have a chance. "What about that lawyer Andrea Lane, she is a good leader." –Randy. I agree so we add her too.

Now we have to get them to the shelter. Randy and I are able to contact them and they arrive to the shelter within 5 minutes. Using a small reactor Randy is able to power the shelter, which runs under the town. The shelter is 1 square mile, and has almost everything! I could not believe it, Randy really outdid himself. "I have always kept it stocked with live game"-Randy. Randy was always paranoid, it does not surprise me that he built this. There was a freshwater pond that was always stocked by a spring he hit wile digging out the pond. "Ok guys! I think we had a stressful night, let's try to get to sleep while we can figure things out tomorrow."- Andrea. She was right; Randy showed us the way to the bedrooms. I remember that night so well, it was my fist night in my new home and I never slept in a worse way! Every time I shut my eyes I saw Dr. Flemings face, I felt overwhelming amounts of guilt, and remorse. Since there was no way I would be getting any sleep I decided to walk around my new habitat. It was beautiful, the entire set up, it was amazing, street lights, lawns, crops, cows, chickens, rabbits, almost anything you could think of. As I walked past the small 1 room houses that everyone had I noticed that everyone was fast asleep, accept for Andrea, I could see her through the window. She was sitting on her bed, crying, and eating out of a big bag of potato chips, she must have packed them with her. I swiftly walked away before she noticed me and then I began to tear up, I put her through this, I should be on the outside suffering with the others and not in here from harm!

I was so caught up in my thoughts that I didn't notice the sun rise. Could it all have been a bad dream? Was I asleep the whole time! Unfortunately no, I was awake, what I was seeing was an artificial sky, it keeps track of the time and weather of the outside world and adjusts accordingly.

By the time the sun is fully up we all met at the central park, we are issued electrical cars, and taught how to charge them. The rest of the day people just explore the new land. People went swimming in the spring, walking on the roads, and even racing in their cars. I personally found that this behavior is strange among adults, but now with no authority figures looking down on them, they have some fun. Everyone was so preoccupied that no one ate anything. As the sun went down I ate only an apple, my first "meal" in the shelter.

As the night fell I lay down on my bed, I closed my eyes and saw his face, the Doctor's. I finally fell asleep, but not for long, the sound of alarms woke me up, I jump out of bed to see what the emergency was. To my surprise there were no alarms going off. It must have been in my dream or something. I could not fall asleep again. As I lay there the hours slowly fall into day 3.

    Day: 7

It has been a while since I wrote, but nothing of significance happened between now and then. Unfortunately Danny Donne has hung himself. We should have seen this coming, he was complaining about being locked in, he missed the free land. That and Andrea has been stealing food in the night. She has been digging up the crops and hoarding the food. SHE MUST DIE!

The time is now 2:01 AM, the doors did not lock on the apartment, so I walked in on Andrea sleeping. I looked down at her, I took both of my hands, slid them around her neck and squeezed. I squeezed the life out of her. She screamed and struggled! I looked down at her as the last breath passed out of her mouth. "What the hell is going on here?!"- Randy. He must have heard her and rushed in. As I killed Andre I must kill Randy. I run out side, find the biggest branch I can, and I start to beat him. I beat him until he is dead.

What have I done? Why? I must punish myself. I plan to hang my self soon. If I don't right again, it is because I am dead.

Publishers Note- This article was found buried under ground of New Smallstown, while digging a new sewage pipeline. The names used match up with records of citizens in Smallstown.
