Having recently been given the chance to preview the risqué new animation from Sterkoti Productions, I found myself hooked. It has been advertised as taking the world of adult animations in a completely new direction but I find myself disagreeing. I feel it holds true to many of the market prerequisites that have to be adhered to; otherwise the audience would be unable to engage with it. However the new concepts, edgy situations and subject matters would have to be at least described as taking it to a whole new level. For years the adult animation industry has fluctuated between three points, we have the family cartoon with the very subtle inside jokes that allow the adult to enjoy along with the child. The next of course being the teenage antics that has obvious adult but extremely politically correct jokes that allow it to be marketed to both teenagers and adults. Finally we are left with your politically incorrect animations whose brash in your face humor is designed to shock and provoke guilty laughs that are solely targeted towards adults. Assholios manages to combine elements of each in a commercially viable and more importantly enjoyable show.
What happens when 9 Ass-Faced Aliens land on Earth with only one goal in mind, Conquest! In a hilarious tableau we see them attempt to manipulate both animals and humans with their successes and failures being but one plot running through this exciting series. Their metamorphosis of a human teenager into a human Assholio both to his detriment and benefit allows the audience to engage slightly more with the events they are watching. The Assholios very nature puts them in situations that along with the way they inevitably react lead to side-splitting consequences and shocking twists. An extremely addictive and compelling storyline, none the less it is not overly complex and can easily be followed and understood by all.
This new concept by Sterkoti Productions can only be described as fairly risqué and pretty edgy; to do otherwise would be to downplay the effect it could have on the market. However, we do have to ask the question, ‘has it gone too far’, the problem with any form of entertainment that attempts to push the edge is occasionally it pushes to far and becomes ostracized. Are we seeing the ‘new Ass Kids on the Block’; or a show too risqué for what society will allow at this current time?
As I have said previously to try to downplay the edginess and risqué nature of this animation would be to sell it short. The shock that the nature and origin of the jokes will install in the viewer is one of its many virtues. Entertainment is the medium whereby society grows and it does this by pushing what is acceptable and what it seen as taboo. Animated shows especially have made a large amount of money capitalizing on the fact that because actual people are not seen doing the actions, society is more lenient. That is not to say Assholios is some sordid series just going for the extreme vote, it’s a well rounded show but it will afford you some very guilty chuckles. Its edginess is part of its appeal but not its only appeal and I believe a necessary part of its makeup.
In conclusion Assholios seems like an animation destined to take the world by storm, with a deep but not overly complex plot and extremely engaging characters that are likeable despite and because of their flaws. An animation that is easy to begin watching and extremely addictive I see no reason why Assholios cannot be both a cult and commercial success. In my personal opinion I cannot wait to see more of this highly enjoyable show and will be waiting for Sterkoti Productions with baited breath and I suggest you do the same.
