The HiSET High School Equivalency Test — 10 Things to Know

The HiSET is a new test option for those seeking their high school equivalency certificate.

It used to be that the GED (General Education Development) test was the be-all and end-all to getting your high school equivalency certificate. However, now there is another option. Twelve U.S. states have added Educational Testing Service's (ETS) HiSET as a means to acquiring a high school diploma.

The following list is designed to help you be prepared as you move forward with your education:

    10. ETS wants to help people achieve their goals, which is why the HiSET is almost half the cost of the GED.

    9. Even the most readied test takers have performance anxiety. To this point, you can opt to take all the tests (there are five) in one day or space them over a period of time.

    8. To ready yourself for the test, ETS offers free test prep, study tips and practice tests online.

    7. The exam can be taken in either English or Spanish so test takers have the option of using one of these two languages that they are most comfortable with.

    6. If a sense of accomplishment doesn't motivate you to get your degree, maybe money will. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, people who have a high school diploma or certificate can earn almost $10,000 more per year than those who don't.

    5. To secure a future for you or your family, this translates to more than $300,000 over a lifetime by having a high school certificate.

    4. ETS is a nonprofit organization with the sole mission of providing access to quality testing and free resources to support educational growth.

    3. Experts at Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce say that two-thirds of all jobs in the U.S. will necessitate some form of advanced education or training by 2018. In order to apply for college (and ensure your future), you will need to earn your high school credential.

    2. By earning your high school diploma, you set your own path in the world to, not just a job, but a potential career. More opportunities for work open up with your high school certificate in hand.

    1. Past decisions don't have to hinder your future. Recent test takers said they had a significant feeling of accomplishment, knowing they had overcome a challenge they once thought unachievable.
