10 Pro-Choice Comedians Who Stand Up For Reproductive Rights

Many comedians do more than make us laugh. They can spark conversations about current events, pop culture, and politics. That’s why we’re pretty excited that pro-choice comedian Katie Rich of The Second City is hosting our 19th annual Chicago #PowerofChoice Luncheon. We’re hoping for at least one “shutdown” joke.

Check out these pro-choice comedians who’ve talked (and joked) about the state of a woman’s right to choose:

1) Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler is a huge supporter of reproductive rights and has worked pro-choice values into her comedy on multiple occasions. Check out a classic clip of Amy and comedian Seth Myers talking about access to birth control on Saturday Night Live.

2) Tina Fey

Amy Poehler’s BFF and former SNL co-star, Tina Fey, has also been an outspoken proponent of women’s freedom and privacy. Last year, she spoke candidly about politicians trying to redefine “rape” at a benefit for the Center for Reproductive Rights.

3) Margaret Cho

Margaret has spoken openly about her abortion and the negative stigma associated with abortion care, “I talk a lot about abortion and people get really freaked out. I’m not even making a political statement. I’m just talking about what happened! I have had them and I want to talk about them. I don’t care what your views are toward abortion, I just think women should be talking about it.”

4) Aisha Tyler

Actress and comedian Aisha Tyler is an avid supporter of reproductive rights and even sits on the board of Planned Parenthood. In an interview with The Root, she said, “For all the women who maybe don't think of themselves as pro-life but aren't necessarily either worried about or fighting for women's access to abortion, what they don't realize is all of the other personal freedoms that can be eroded when legal abortion is taken away…We want to make abortion legal, safe and rare. The way to do that is to give women access to birth control and information.”

5) Stephen Colbert

Comedian Stephen Colbert makes us laugh by satirizing current events, including the fight for access to reproductive-health care and family planning services. In one segment, Colbert covered politicians’ attempts to defund Planned Parenthood. You can watch it here.

6) Sarah Silverman

Sarah Silverman is known for pushing the boundaries of comedy. During the 2012 elections, she even made a PSA about the importance of men supporting women’s reproductive rights.

7) Samantha Bee

“Correspondent” for The Daily Show, Samantha Bee, had us LOL-ing with her hilarious coverage of the 2012 elections.

8) Whoopi Goldberg

Comedian and activist Whoopi Goldberg was a speaker at the March for Women’s Lives in 2004. Whoopi also passionately defends women’s reproductive choices on ABC’s The View.

9) Chelsea Handler

Snarky comedian Chelsea Handler has talked openly about her abortion and isn’t shy about voicing her pro-choice values, “Obviously you should do whatever you want with your body and you shouldn't let anyone tell you what to do. It's your decision. And of course no, I have no regret at all.”

10) George Carlin

Master comedian George Carlin was anything but shy in his comedy. He expressed his views on and passion for women’s reproductive freedom during one of his many stand-up comedy shows.
