6 Things A Pilot's Wife Will Understand

1. Being alone(cue the violin)…However, most of us enjoy the alone time. We have evolved our lives around someone else’s presence, or lack thereof and act accordingly. We would like to show pity when a girlfriend with a 9-5 husband tells us of their stress during the day with the children, however, still harbor a little back-of-the-mind roundhouse to the face for them since our husband just left for a 5 day trip. As in he will not be home for 5 days. When he gets home he will most likely be tired. We love them anyway and we find ways to fill our part-time single mother lives. Sometimes we fill them with a nice glass or five of wine.
2. How to stop planning ahead. At least not until their lines come out. We can wish away that dear Bob will be home during Betty’s 50th birthday party, but chances are we are going solo. Holiday party at school? Just mom. Appointment at the doctor? Nope. Having a baby? You better hope he can get back from JFK, on an oversold flight before you pop that little heathen out.
3. How to travel without breaking the bank. We normally get free or heavily discounted tickets on air travel. We even get discounts on hotels, resorts, rental cars, and some airline crews get discounts at restaurants and shops. We may travel like we are missionaries, but never underestimate how little we just spent on that vacation.
4. How to do it your damn self. It does not really matter what “it” is, but chances are “it” happened on day 2 of a 4 day trip. You will be handling that yourself. It sounds terrible, however we are very industrious women. In short, we get shit done.
5. Our children are industrious as well. They learn very early on that when they get sick, mommy will be there. Daddy? Probably not(refer to the above situation, where shit happens when they leave). They are the kids that run into daddy’s arms and scream every time they see him. They make daddy feel and look like a hero with every appearance. They really seem to value their time with their dad since they know he will leave and they are stuck with mom.
6. We cringe with every airline incident. When a friend calls and asks where your husband is in a concerned tone, we immediately start googling and turn on the news. We hate to see anything happen and even when we know it wasn’t our husband, or someone we know, we still send every prayer, well wish, and thought to not only the passengers, but the crew and their families as well.
