SamMicCham 7 months agoUgh, I went over to a friends house, but he failed to tell me there were going to be other people there, all hanging out in the front yard. I just froze on the drive way, my breathing got shallow and I very loudly/rudely wheezed “YOU DID NOT TELL ME THESE PEOPLE WOULD BE HERE” while everyone stared at me. I just began shaking violently, crawled back into my car and had a nice tear-filled panic attack. Social anxiety is normal. Social Anxiety Disorder is another thing all together.

primavolta 7 months agoAnyone who says social anxiety isn’t a thing clearly is lucky enough not to suffer from it, but that’s the case with most mental disorders. I can tell you that that there is a big difference between being shy and getting so anxious about certain social situations that you can’t stop shaking, dry heaving (or straight up vomiting, but that has never happened to me)/otherwise feeling sick to your stomach, your limbs freeze up, or uncontrollable crying. Besides, social anxiety and phobias can be present in certain social situations but not all. For me, I have anxiety attacks when I run into people with whom I’ve had serious negative interactions with in the past or who I associate with negative situations, as well as going to parties or social gatherings where I don’t know anyone. I can, however, do things like perform well in job interviews, be employed in a reasonably social environment or be in social situations with people I know well - predictable, reasonably comfortable situations where I know I will do well. A lot of people are surprised that I have difficulty with certain social situations because I’m outgoing in others, so I don’t think I could be classified as “just shy”.

StacySweaters 7 months agoTrue Story: Last night I was supposed to meet a friend and her pals out at a fancy club. Ended up driving there and as I started to drive through the parking lot I saw all the people all glitzed up and immediately left and went to my ex’s friends’ house and hung out with them and then faked an excuse that some “drama” came up to my pal. :/

LionessFeathers 7 months agoYeah… Social anxiety can be a beast. I have a hard time even going around people I know well, because I’m so sure they’re discussing me as soon as I leave. It’s not just face to face either: I wrote and rewrote exactly what I wanted to say in this post repeatedly. Often, I will write something and then just close the tab because I just don’t feel comfortable speaking my mind unless it’s something that’s really important (in my mind). I like this list, and I’ll be showing it to some people who could use a visual aid to what those with social anxiety since it’s nearly impossible to put into words.
