1. In 1972, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and NASA started a television network meant to be an “informative/instructional network focused on providing real education through the medium of TV.”
3. In 1980 the network was privatized and became “The Learning Channel.”

kevinnivek 7 months agoWhat if you’re too poor to afford cable? Do you want all those kids who are poor through no fault of their own to go without ANY educational programming? No Sesame Street for the young ones, or Nova for the older ones? When i was a kid, we didn’t have much money, and didn’t have cable (and yes, both of my parents worked their asses off), and i am so thankful that we had PBS in our lives. When did this country start not giving a shit for those less fortunate than us???

Almost all the money that that extremely small percentage of our taxes goes to The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which in turn gives it to many different sources, which includes local public stations and networks, which then buys programming from NPR, PRI and PBS, among many other sources.
