The texting was probably due to his anxiety of telling his mom. Most likely using it to not fully be in the moment because the situation was too overwhelming. Probably wasn't even texting, just fiddling around.

When I first saw the guy I thought his mom must have been a fool to not have realized it already, but then she said she kind of already knew. I mean it's pretty damn obvious. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just that this would be like coming home to your cat telling you it licks it's own butt. You don't have to tell me that, cat. I already knew it, and I still love you just the same.
