They come about as close as I’ve seen it, I guess, even for a heavily edited montage. The thing is, I don’t think you can really “get” (not capture—get) NOLA on film—particularly motion picture film stock. Not trying to sound artsy or poetic, but it’s true—a big part of what makes New Orleans is a mixture of aesthetics and attitudes and atmospheres and…other stuff. It pervades the whole city, and to me it never felt like the more tangible qualities that make other cities unique. It’s haunted, but not necessarily by ghosts. Oh well, I give up. Whatever it is, it doesn’t entirely translate to film. About the closest you can get is something that looks and sounds kinda like the real NOLA, but as seen through the atmosphere of a different planet. I don’t have cable, but with all I’ve heard from fans of The Wire, I guess the creative team working on this will have a better-than-average chance to avoid ridiculous cliches, at least. (Disclosure: I grew up in South Louisiana, but I’ve never really felt “right” in New Orleans, sadly enough—so I’m not saying this stuff because I’m all starry-eyed.) Oh, and it’s pronounced truh-MAY. Just an FYI that will allow me to be spared from having to hear the Creole/French/Acadian-deprived try to rhyme it with “cream,” or something equally awful.
