turtlefeed a year agoI did some searching and I finally found out where image 2 (the mandrake) came from. It’s from an edition of Hortus Sanitatis, possibly the 1497 Strasbourg copy, making it the only legitimate 15th century strike in the lot. Unless it’s a later edition that uses the same woodcuts. But let me reiterate that these are mostly 16th century woodcut prints. Prodigiorum was first printed in 1557…!

These are actually 16th (or 17th?) century woodcuts. It’s hard to say without more surrounding text to match these to a particular edition. The man with his head beneath his shoulders is from an edition of Prodigiorum ac ostentorum chronicon by Lycosthenes, and I suspect the woodcuts in a similar style are from various editions of that book. He’s pretty popular, and he’s redrawn many times for different texts. 1 and 10 look like they’re from a 17th century illustrated edition of Botero’s Le relationi universali. Don’t quote me on this, but I suspect these are from the section on Africa, as there’s an early modern trope about African women being able to suckle children over their shoulder. 2 is definitely a mandrake, but as that’s very popular imagery I’m not sure where that particular woodcut is from.
