Take highly resourceful geeks, a target of obsession, and the financial freedom of being an adult, mix well, and what do you get? Massive projects bent on turning their humble abodes into real-life replicas of their favorite pop-culture icons, of course. Everything from the cubist minimalism of hit computer game Minecraft to the 70s-themed vision of the future popularized in Star Wars, if a phenomenon is big enough, you can be sure a resourceful geek has turned fiction into fact.

Creeper in your bedroom

Talk to any in-the-know kid nowadays and there is a good chance they know about Minecraft. The mega successful game has sold over 10 million copies worldwide and exposed a new generation of gamers to the concept of digital Legos. Piecing together worlds bit by bit is captivating enough, but that does not mean things have to stop when the game is turned off. Filled with chunky cuboid structures and surfaces adorned with flat, pixelated textures, Minecraft-themed bedrooms have been growing in popularity for young fans of the game. A number of online guides are available for parents who want to take the DIY route, but even big retailers like IKEA are getting in on the action by offering Minecraft-styled furnishings.

These aren't the homes you're looking for

A franchise as big as Star-Wars is a lock to have plenty of real-life homages, especially since the kids who grew up watching the movies in their heyday are all grown up now. For instance, take the guy in Carmel, Indianapolis who converted his entire basement so it resembled a deck on the DeathStar, complete with a bar and retro-styled pool table. Even rebel scum would be welcome to kick back here for a bit, though the life-sized Darth Vader statue in the corner might be a bit intimidating. If the Alliance is more to your liking, you could head over to a house in Visalia, California to check out a bedroom that has the entire front section of a Y-Wing space fighter crashing through the wall. The force is strong with these geeks.

Boldly going where no house has gone before

We can not forget about the granddaddy of all popular science fiction, Star Trek. Trekkies who grew up watching the adventures of Kirk or Picard have taken their fandom to a whole new level, converting entire homes into sections of the star ship Enterprise. Line Rainville started out by decorating her entertainment center with Star Trek style elements and quickly expanded beyond that room to encompass her entire home. Another Tekkie, self-proclaimed "24th century interior designer" Tony Alleyne, took the motif of the Enterprise's transporter room and redid his entire home in the same style. The end result looks so authentic that it resembles more of a movie set than a living space.

No ordinary homes

The unbridled passion of these fan projects speaks to the influence their respective properties have had. Gone are the days of simply hanging up a poster or placing a figurine on a desk. Geeks today are pulling out all the stops when it comes to new home construction, turning a mundane residence into a fantastical representation of what they love. What will we see when the young geeks of today grow up in twenty years?
