An Australian Woman Has Finally Been Named "Minister For Women"

As Joe Hockey announces shock resignation, the new PM sacks senior right wing ministers.

New prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has used a ministerial reshuffle to sweep a broom through the Australian government front-benchers.

Turnbull, who snatched the top job last week, sacked right wing ministers Kevin Andrews and Eric Abetz on Sunday, and announced five women for the ministry.

The new PM finally named a woman as "Minister for Women" after Tony Abbott had previously took responsibility for the portfolio. Michaelia Cash was named in the role and she also became minister for employment.

But easily the biggest scalp was the treasurer Joe Hockey, who told Turnbull he was intending to resign from parliament after more than a decade as a Liberal party heavy hitter.

Scott Morrison took over the top economic job of treasurer.

The full list of ministers included new names but also lots of reshuffling in major portfolios.

Senator Mitch Fifield was appointed minister for communications and the arts, Senator Marise Payne took on defence and Senator Simon Birmingham was moved into education.

It meant that Christopher Pyne moved into the industry portfolio, while Christian Porter became minister for social services.

But perhaps the biggest winner was Kelly O'Dwyer, who became the first woman ever to enter the economic cabinet as assistant treasurer.

Even on the edges there were big stories to tell: Wyatt Roy, who is only 25, became assistant minister for innovation.

Incredibly honoured & humbled PM @TurnbullMalcolm has asked me to serve as the new Assistant Minister for Innovation.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten leapt on the announcement, praising Turnbull's elevation of more women but was highly critical of the lack of disabilities portfolio.

It was a HUGE day in Canberra as Australia got a look at its new government.
