This Popular Bill Shorten Meme Just Happened Again IRL

    "I believe... (checks notes)."

If there's one meme that follows around Labor leader Bill Shorten it's this snappy gif from a Melbourne press conference.

It's regularly posted on social media by critics of the former union powerbroker who argue it's comical proof he doesn't stand for anything.

Well the Shorten meme has happened IRL again... at the worst possible time.

During his all-important asylum seeker speech delivered at the party's national conference on Saturday, Shorten was caught declaring his beliefs and then checking his notes.

Shorten told the conference a Labor government would tow back asylum seeker boats in a move that has split the party on ideological lines.

It wasn't the only time he did it! Just a minute later Shorten repeated the move.

We counted and Shorten looked down at his notes 196 other times during his 15 minute speech to the party conference. It's important to note he did not have a teleprompter... still, it's a lot of times.

You can watch Shorten's momentous boats speech... (checks notes)... here.
