The young senator was directing the lyrics at foreign minister and deputy leader Julie Bishop, who had survived the leadership rebellion that cost Tony Abbott his job.
It's all because the revolving door of the opposing party leadership had inspired Dastyari to conduct a Twitter call-out for suggestions on songs about Ms Bishop.
He told parliament: "I will tell you who is relevant: Taylor Swift. And in Taylor Swift's poetic, beautiful and – I think – touching song 'Blank Space', which really is a modern soliloquy on the Liberal Party."
He insisted: "I am quoting a poet here. I notice that other senators are laughing; I just do not think they are treating this with the respect that it deserves."
