The Pregnant Refugee Who Wanted An Abortion Is Being Sent Back To Nauru

The alleged rape victim did not receive the treatment she originally requested.

The pregnant Somali refugee who came to Australia to have an abortion is being sent back to Nauru without medical treatment, according to lawyers.

Abyan has been at Sydney's Villawood Detention Centre since Sunday, awaiting medical treatment after being allegedly raped at Nauru's detention centre two months ago.

But her lawyer George Newhouse confirmed to BuzzFeed News she's been sent back to Nauru without the abortion she requested.

Refugee advocates have hit back at reports immigration officials decided she'd be sent back after she herself declined the treatment.

"I sat with Abyan on Tuesday at Villawood where she made it clear that

she wanted to see counsellors regarding the termination of her

pregnancy," said the Refugee Action Coalition's Ian Rintoul.

"Immigration is claiming that Abyan has declined to proceed with the

termination, but this has not been confirmed with Abyan herself."

The case of 23-year-old Abyan (not her real name) has been thrust into the national spotlight after ABC 7:30 revealed she and another woman, Najma, had been allegedly raped on Nauru.

The Nauruan police have closed the investigation into Najma's claim she was raped deciding there was no evidence of the incident.

BuzzFeed News has asked immigration minister Peter Dutton's office about Abyan's removal from Villawood.
