Why ABCs New Show Forever Should Be Given A Second Life

ABCs new show Forever, starring the ultra suave and handsome Ioan Gruffudd, is an interesting show with captivating elements. The only problem? Its ratings haven't been all that great due to its time-slot and the fact not very many people have been tuning in (duh). So here is the breakdown of the many reasons why you should watch, or set your DVRs, every Tuesday night at 10/9 central:

Ioan Gruffudd (AKA Henry Morgan) Himself

Ioan Gruffudd is a handsome man with acting chops and really brings his character, Henry Morgan, to life. Or to death? IDK just let me explain. Henry Morgan first died over 200 years ago trying to save the life of a slave on a cargo ship. The captain shot him and threw him overboard but he regenerated and came back to life. Ever since then, whenever he dies he always resurfaces in a body of water but get this: NAKED. Morgan doesn't die in every episode but we get to explore his past a la Once Upon A Time style. Living for 200 years without dying makes you pretty curious about death itself, so overtime Henry became a medical examiner and currently works for New York City. Not only is he a genius, using his intelligence to observe everyday people and the corpses, he is also pretty damn charming and witty. Once when a man drew a gun on him he stated :"This might come as a surprise to you, but being shot? Not the worst way to go"

The Detective

Jo Martinez is an NYPD detective whose husband recently passed away and is searching for a new meaning to her life. She is a smart woman who most certainly ins't afraid to put Henry in his place. She first met him when a New York Subway train crashed and needed a report on the death of the conductor. Martinez appreciates the way Henrys mind works and decides to use him as her M.E. (Medical Examiner) on her cases and a friendship quickly develops. You can just hear the groans from the readers: "Urgh another crime show love story" and "Really? Ripping off Castle?" But it isn't like that. Well not yet at least. There doesn't seem to be any romance between the two mostly in part that Martinez isn't over her husband and Henry? Ya there was a special lady in his life too. Right now their Facebook relationship status would definitely say : Friends.

The Incredibly Sweet Father Son Relationship

Just a normal picture of a father and his son, enjoying each others company. This just so happens to be one of the most interesting concepts of the series. Whoops ,sorry forgot to mention the older man in this photo is Abe, Henrys son. Yes you read that right. Henry adopted Abe as a baby when rescued from a concentration camp during the second World War. Just so happened to meet the love of his life the same moment he met Abe. Their relationship helps balance Henry and the show altogether so its not all murder-death. Along with living together, Abe runs an antique store made up of mostly Henrys personal items hes collected over the years. Abe doesnt refer to Henry as "dad" but some of their remarks makes the father-son due still strong with Abe saying things like "I'm a doctors son what do you think?" and Henry saying such remarks as "I remember many trips to the dentists when you were little". They care for each other, because basically..they only have each other.

Henrys Nerdy-Dorky-Awesome Colleague

Lucas. Lucas, Lucas...Lucas. He is the comic relief of the show and just so dorky that it cant help but make you smile. He constantly tries to get know Henry but is always met with rejection but will ask him occasionally if he wants to go get coffee together or grab a beer somewhere. Lucas is a funny ,comic book reading ("Theyre graphic novels!"), medical examiner who needs more screen time.

The Flashbacks

Remember earlier it was mentioned that the flashbacks are a bit like Once Upon A Time, that the present reflects the characters past? That element is also prevalent in Forever though not every 5 minuets. But each episode you learn something new about him, his life, or his pasts careers. A common flashback has to do with this beautiful woman named Abigail, whom he married post-world war two and shared Abe with. Not much is known what happened to her, although Henry states she "came to her senses and left me." but the viewers suspect otherwise. Abe remembers her as well remarking he "[Misses] her too but shes not coming back." More will be revealed about Abigail presumably. You also learn how the current cases tie with Henry and his past, be it he knew the person or reminds him of a time in his life. The flashbacks are an element ABC knows works well.

This Dude Named Adam

A breathtaking title I put huh? Ya well Adam is basically a dude, this weird dude that calls Henry up at random times. Adam knows about Henrys condition because he himself cannot die either except Adam has lived much longer..like 10x as long. Which calculates to about 2000 years. Adam is a somewhat consistent conflict in the show, but doesnt seem to be evil (well there was that one time where he like killed Henry? I WONT SAY ANYMORE). Adam comes and goes not making an appearance (for lack of a better word) for many episodes or will be in a few consecutively. There is no picture of Adam so enjoy a startled Dr.Morgan and Detective Martinez.

The Cases

The cases can either range from apparent suicides to full blown copycat Jack the Ripper murders. Some will leave you with an 'Ok that was good" to "HOLY SHIT". Henry always lends his extensive knowledge to every single case because you know, hes been alive for 200 years.. The writing is good, the characters are great (more character development needed plz), the cases are intriguing, and learning about Henrys past is captivating.

Trust me. Its really good.

This show seriously needs to be given a chance. Watch it on Hulu, stream it directly from the ABC website or simply catch it Tuesday nights. The time slot is a hard one but Forever is gaining a strong following already but it needs to be boosted so more and more people can know about it. The problem with many shows being cancelled isn't that they weren't good, its just not enough people watched them. Forever is the type of show that gets better with age and if ABC just gives it a chance then surely they will have a huge success on their hands.
