Every year, 800 new students join our new Oberlin family. On the eighth anniversary of the class of 2010's arrival to campus, I set out to meet our newest cousins during move-in day.
...and there were some spectacular answers within those categories, too, including:
how to harvest honey,
how to string a racquet,
and how to use a vocal looping pedal.
What I loved the most from this exercise was very simple: we choose Oberlin in part because of all the things we will learn, experience, and absorb here, and this will set us up to be the best version of ourselves we can be in order to make the world a better place.
That's fresh and exciting, but it's also easy to forget in these new situations — as new students, as new graduates, as new friends, employees, roommates, partners, all kinds of new and exciting things — that we bring so much to the table as well. Everything we care about and are capable of makes the Oberlin community (actually, every community we're a part of) that much more special, spectacular, and awesome.
Hearts and hugs,
