Letizia Rossi is a writer and trends consultant based in New York City.
Style Buzz Singer Beyoncé’s fashion line, House of Dereon, has created a collection for young girls. The controversial ad campaign features preschoolers in four inch heels, feather boas and looking generally trashy. I can only imagine how terrifying of the House of Dereon Baby collection must be.
Style Buzz Blogger Perez Hilton is debuting a clothing line with Hot Topic. Look forward to Perezcious Pink t-shirts, hoodies, accessories and footwear. There is also Gossip Ganster flip flops, and some sort of lipgloss. I’m wondering if the lipgloss can be used to create that lovely white drool, or coke nose effect that Perez seem to do in MS Paint.
Movie Buzz Milk, a biopic about slain San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk, who was California’s first openly gay elected official is in the works and will be released 26 November 2008. Considered a Martyr of the gay community, Supervisor Milk will be played by Sean Penn and the film will be directed by Gus Van Sant. Milk’s assassin Dan White will be played by Josh Brolin (not Matt Damon as was rumored) who will get to hone his acting chops by reenacting the famous “Twinkie Defense”.
Style Buzz The classic florals from Liberty of London have been everywhere. The cute florals show up in Chloe Sevigny’s line for Opening Ceremony, and just recently on some adorable Nike hightops. Due to the popularity of the “Liberty Print’ keyword, its now impossible to find an affordable early 90s floral frock on eBay.
Culture Buzz A series of photographs of terminally ill subjects taken shortly before and after their death are being exhibited in London. The photos depict 24 subjects ranging from a 17-month-old baby to an 83-year-old man. Like a much creepier version of Young Me/Now Me, the exhibit is challenging Western taboos about death and dying.
Movie Buzz Expedia has created tours inspired by the Indiana Jones movies. Destinations include India, Egypt, Italy, China, Jordan, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, and the Southwestern United States. There is no mention in the PR materials of whether travelers need supply their own young Asian boy to act as Short Round.
Tech Buzz You can now customize your Google home page with skins designed by big name artists and designers. Google recruited 68 artists, designers and musicians to create the ‘Artist Themes’ including Dolce and Gabbana, Diane Von Fustenberg and Oscar de la Renta, Shepard Fairey, Philippe Starck, Todd Oldman, Jeff Koons, and Marc Ecko. It’s fun to switch it up but in most cases what works on a wrap dress doesn’t really work as a web design.
Style Buzz A New York spa is offering a a ‘Geisha Facial’ that involves the use of nightingale excrement. Apparently the powder know as uguisu no fun has been used in Japan since the 18th century and contains the amino acid guanine which is said to brighten and cleanse the skin. Nothing it too insane for me when it comes to my skin so I am willing to give it a shot. Luckily the girls at Jezebel found uguisu no fun online for less than $20.
Food Buzz Designers and crafters are producing creative alternatives to cardboard Java Jackets. The designs range from a wooden cuff that doubles as a bracelet to knitted and patchwork sleeves with pockets. I wonder how long until Louis Vuitton and Gucci get in on the action.
Tech Buzz Built-in Wi-Fi detectors are popping up on watches, bags, pens, T-Shirts and even sneakers. As much as I am ready to embrace my inner geek, I think I am going to hold out for the Wi-Fi sniffing platform gladiator sandals.
Celebrity Buzz Lohan is at work on a third album that includes collaborations with Snoop Dog, Pharrell and Timbaland. Whether this is a desperate attempt to find a way to create revenue for the un-insurable actress or just a contractual obligation, the album is bound to be a guilty pleasure. I’m hoping she draws some influence from that mix-tape Devendra Banhart made her.
Style Buzz Artist Nadia Plesneris being sued by Louis Vuitton for depicting a LV-inspired bag in an image sold to raise money for a Darfur Charity. The image depicting a Darfur victim carrying a designer handbag and a Paris Hilton-style dog was meant to draw attention to the media’s disproportionate focus on celebrities. The Paris based company is demanding over $20,000 for each day that Plesener continues her project, presumably because they do not appreciate having their brand equated with genocide, a move that seems to have backfired.
Style Buzz The high-concept sunglasses by Linda Farrow are pushing the eyewear envelope. The line has collaborated with big name designers including Jeremy Scott, Luella, Dries Van Noten and Chloe Sevigny. Although the Beak Glasses are pretty out there, I am kind of loving the Minnie Mouse look of the Jeremy Scott glasses pictured.
Tech Buzz Tania Derveaux is offering to have sex with every virgin who defends net neutrality. Her quest is to “wage war with love” in defense of free speech and internet freedom. Any virgin who can prove that they defend net neutrality is eligible. However, the rules forbid any “surprise buttsex,” and services can be denied for hygiene reasons.
Style Buzz Fashion line Anzevino and Florence collection “Sometimes Catastrophes Become Trophies” features fabrics that change color with body heat. We were definitely due for a Hypercolor revival. I am going to wear mine with a bubble necklace.
Tech Buzz Designer Erik De Nijs has created pair of pants with a built in keyboard and mouse. The nerd blogs are atwitter with criticisms, suggesting all sorts of naughty applications for the “Beauty and the Geek” pants. I’m willing to wager that they are actually some conceptual artistic statement on how humans are becoming one with their gadgets.
Science Buzz Scientific research shows that sophisticated footwear actually does our feet more harm than good. A new line of shoes created by the son of the creator of indie staples Clarks, Wallabees simulate the experience of walking barefoot. Those of us choosing to eschew shoes all together can join a number of organizations including The Society for Barefoot Living , empowering you to contest that burdensome “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service” sign at your favorite fast-food establishment.
