The Moustached Moments Of Paul Weller

He may have led the way in fashion and style down the years, but Paul Weller hasn't always got it right. This is especially the case with his occasional forays into tache-dom.

    1.

The first record I actually bought was Sgt Pepper's. I sold my toys to buy it - I was so obsessed with music. Towards the end of the Sixties they grew moustaches and became themselves. I once grew a little moustache like McCartney had in 1967, but I got too much stick off everyone so I shaved it off. I've always been out to emulate my heroes like Lennon, Steve Marriott from the Small Faces and Pete Townshend from the Who.

Weller remained steadfastly clean-shaven throughout his heyday as frontman for The Jam in the late 1970s and early 1980s. However, when the Woking wonder formed The Style Council in 1983, all bets were off.

    3. The Adolf Hitler (1985)

Sometimes he has badly misjudged things. take for example the bleached hair of 1988 or the floppy fringe of 1985 he sported for the front core of Our Favourite Shop, which had us asking him to grow a little moustache so we can call him Hitler.

While The Style Council singer declined, an unforgiving shadow on the photo on the inner sleeve nevertheless gave Mr Weller a touch of Führer-ness about him.

    4. The Ian Rush (1986)

    5. The Adolf Hitler Mk II (1987)

    6. The George Harrison (1995)

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Mark and Lard took the opportunity to rip the piss out of this moment on their radio show. Since then, we've not had another sighting of Weller's moustache. Bit like The Jam, a comeback is not on the cards.
