The #1 Rule to Social Media Success is...................
I was sitting on LinkedIn and had a light bulb moment. LinkedIn is a Social Media platform! I know this sounds weird but, I didn't look at LinkedIn as a Social Media platform while I was there at that time. As a matter of fact, because LinkedIn is one of my favorite platforms I can't remember when I ever looked at it as a "Social Media Platform," it's just a place I hang out.
The day before this revelation I was "hanging out" on Twitter and I'm not a Twitter person, but this time I just hung out there and interacted with everyone. I had such a great time and guess what? I'm currently pushing an event that is dear to my heart (you can find information about that here) and as I was interacting and hanging out I shared the event and it was shared and put in front of (check this out) over 1 million people. It wasn't the fact that it was shared and put in front of so many people, the big thing was it was constantly put in front of these people.
So yes, all of these things just made me think about who is where. What are Facebook users like? Why are Twitter users and LinkedIn users different? Who uses Instagram and what satisfaction do they get out of it?
These are the questions you and your whole staff should be asking because the bottom line is this: you have to know why these platforms are appealing to know who are on them and how to connect to them.
You don't do Facebook, but you have a company page there right? If you really want to make conversions on these platforms you need to know the users. When you don't know who you are talking to and why it's like selling ice-cream to the lactose intolerant. You might get a sale, but it will cost a lot and the ROI will be horrible (as is a lot of Social Media efforts today).
There are over 7.125 billion people in the world and a great number of those people will buy your product if you know how to reach them. Someone sold you water in America where water is free and now it's a staple in our country. They are even selling air in Hong Kong. Air..................but if you know who your customers are and how to talk to them you can sell it.
The #1 Rule to Social Media Success is:
You have to know why they like that particular Social Media platform and how they use it, what they get out of that platform and what it does for them. Then, talk to them on that level or in that language.
I'm not talking about the usual targeting you are given when you place ads on these platforms, that's good too but I'm speaking on the users themselves. Who is on Facebook and why? What does Twitter do for someone? Why are you on LinkedIn? Speak the language of those answers and get your conversions!
