Geographic Location
Shanghai is situated at 31 14' north latitude and 121 29' east longitude. Bordering on Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces on the west, Shanghai is washed by the East China Sea on the east and Hangzhou Bay on the south. North of the city, the Yangtze River pours into the East China Sea. It also assumes the central location along China’s coastal line. Thanks to its advantageous geographic location, Shanghai has become an excellent sea and river port, boasting easy accesses to a vast hinterland.
Climate
With a pleasant northern subtropical maritime monsoon climate, Shanghai enjoys four distinct seasons, generous sunshine and abundant rainfall. Its spring and autumn are relatively short compared with the summer and winter. In 2008, the average annual temperature was 17.5 degrees Celsius. The city had a total sunshine time of 1,534.7 hours in 2008 and received a total rainfall of 1,512.8 millimeters. About 70% of the precipitation came during the May-September flood season.
Population
Due to the constant inflow of people from other parts of the country, the population in Shanghai keeps growing. When Shanghai was turned into a city, it had a population of less than 100,000. By the time Shanghai was liberated in 1949, the figure rose to 5.2 million. By the end of 2008, however, the city’s permanent residents had grown to 13.9104 million, or 1% of China’s population. The population of long-term residents reached 18.8846 million, including 5.1742 million from other parts of the country. On average, the city had 2,978 long-term residents per square kilometer of land.
Education Level of Population
According to the sample survey of the 1% of the city’s population in 2005, 18.1% of the city’s permanent population aged six and above had received education at college level and above, 6.7 percentage points more than in 2000 when the fifth national census was conducted. Those with senior high school education accounted for 24.8% of the local population, up 1 percentage point while residents with primary and junior middle school education accountedfor 51.6%, a drop of 6.3 percentage points. In 2008, 99.99 percent of school-age children attended the nine-year obligatory education, 97 percent of junior middle school gradu-ates entered senior high schools, and 83.8 percent of gradu-ates of senior high school enrolled into colleges.
Tourist City
Shanghai is one of China’s major tourist cities. In 2008, the added value of the city’s tourist sector reached 95.85 billion yuan, up 7.1% over the previous year. The tourism services also improved further. By the end of 2008, the city had 310 star-rated hotels, included 37 five-star hotels. The city had 901 travel agencies, including 55 international agencies. The city had 24 A-level tourist sites. The city had 27 tourism service centers and five tourist dispatch centers. The city received 6.4037 million international tourists, bringing in US$ 5.027 billion worth of foreign exchanges, and 110.0527 million domestic tourists, earning 161.241 billion yuan
