Why The Women’s Soccer Semifinal Was Definitely Not Fixed For The U.S.
Canada’s players have complained that the refereeing in their game against the U.S. Women’s National Team cost them the win. If anything, it helped them.
The women’s soccer semifinal match between the United States and Canada ruled. Between the seven goals scored in the most dramatically back-and-forth manner possible and the immense likability of the victorious American team, you couldn’t have asked for a better game. Alex Morgan’s 123rd-minute goal might be the Olympics’ most exciting moment yet.
Of course, there were complications. Each team might have gotten away with something they shouldn’t have. The Canadians think the calls against their team were more wrong and more consequential, but as in the War of 1812, they are in the wrong. (“Those who do not remember the War of 1812 are doomed to repeat it,” as the saying goes.)
CANADA’S ARGUMENT: Neither Erin McLeod’s delay-of-game penalty nor the subsequent handball were the right calls.
Image by Hussein Malla / AP
(This is the handball. Abby Wambach converted the penalty kick.)
Canada led 3-2 at the time McLeod was called for holding on to the ball longer than six seconds, which came right around the 75th minute. The delay-of-game call on McLeod is one that you basically never see at the upper levels of soccer — I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in an international or professional game &mdash. As for the handball, the argument against it is that Canadian defender Marie-Eve Nault was already planted in the ball’s path, making the contact either incidental or defensive.
The combination of both of these decisions within minutes of each other had a multiplying effect. Newspapers in Canada cried foul (just kidding — there’s only one newspaper in Canada, and it’s called the Tim Horton’s Gazette) saying the team was robbed; meanwhile, the players suggested the game was rigged in favor of the Americans.
THE UNITED STATES’ ARGUMENT: Melissa Tancredi stomped on Carli Lloyd’s head.
This one came twenty minutes before the handball, when the game was tied 1-1. Watching the replay, you can see Tancredi plant both feet in front of Lloyd’s body, then hop, landing her right foot just wide and her left foot on Lloyd’s head. She then pushes off with her left foot.
Sometimes, players do stupid things because they aren’t paying attention, or because they’re lost in the throes of the game. But those things are still stupid. Tancredi unquestionably stepped on Lloyd’s head, and she should’ve received a red card — it’s not even a discussion. If Canada had to play a woman down from 55 minutes on, their chances of winning the match would have been slim.
I mean, they did, so this is in many ways a moot point. But Tancredi’s stomp unequivocally deserved a red card. And, because it took place first, the stomp takes precedence in our imaginary counterhistorical game — obviously, a 10-woman Canadian squad would’ve changed the entire flow of the game, and so the subsequent situation becomes purely hypothetical. In the case of Canada’s complaints, the call on McLeod was weird, no matter whether it was right or wrong; that, though, wouldn’t have led to a goal were it not for the handball ruling, and that was clearly justified: watching the play, you can see Marie-Eve Nault lift her arm into the path of the ball, and it appears to strike her on the forearm.
However, the single biggest missed call in the match came when Tancredi put her cleat into Carli Lloyd’s head and got away without even a foul. Throughout the game, the ref allowed Canada to play physical, aggressive soccer against the U.S., with Tancredi in particular functioning more like a hockey player than anything else; anyone who suggests that the officiating favored the U.S. was watching a different game than me. (Or didn’t watch at all.)
The U.S. women will play Japan in the gold-medal match on Thursday, and hopefully Japan will be less complain-y.

Ken T. 9 months agoAs a person who does not regularly watch or participate in football matches at any level I can’t comment on whether the ref made the correct call or not. It is unfortunate for the Canadian team that the call concluded the way it did, but probably still the right call. After the game Sinclair made a comment about it and mentioned that refs usually give a warning to goalkeepers about the time they have before making a delay of game call. I heard that the official FIFA rule say the ref is not required to give a warning. This is upsetting because it means the refs have a direct influence over the game. They can chose to give a warning or not which can support a team by giving them a very good opportunity to score a goal. I think the refs should either be required to give a warning in all timed situations (goalkeeper possession, throw ins, corner kicks, etc) or not be allowed to give warnings at all. Ideally, there should be an automated countdown system for situations where time is an issue, similar to a shot clock in basketball. It’s just such a shame that refs decision helped to decide the outcome of the game in a sport that should only be decided by the players skill.

Five Card Charlie 9 months agowhat an anti-Canadian pile of shit. I find this article highly offensive and the fact the Buzzfeed editors even allowed this to be posted goes to show what kind quality goes into putting this website together. While all of you were cheering the US not for winning but for beating the Canadians, the Canadians were cheering their athletes for a game well played and well wishes for the bronze game. That’s the difference between having dignity, and being American. Pathetic.

steve3113 9 months agoAll this article proves is that Americans can’t even take the high road in victory… You have a problem with the ref allowing them to play physical haha… And btw, to the guy who said the ref did warm the Canadian goalie, I would like to know how you know that, and even if she did get warned then it is a yellow, and by mbc’s count, the Americans had more six second violations than Canada… Either way, no one

occ 9 months agoWhat I learned from this soccer article and the subsequent commentary: the four nations involved in the War of 1812—Britain, Canada, the US, and the Indian Confederacy—understand its origins and its conclusion very, very differently. Newsflash: it was a stalemate in the sense that no one really lost. Except for the Indians.

IcemanD 9 months agoThe funniest part of this whole article/comment thread is Americans and Canadians arguing over a sport neither one us gives two shits about. When was the last time us Canadians all got together for Soccer Night in Canada? Or the Americans all sitting down with a cold one for Monday Night Soccer? Calm down people, we will all cease to care about soccer again once the Olympics end. I like to call it the Kony 2012 principle.

Catphrey Bogart 9 months agoThis is just terrible reasoning. It’s like the reasoning behind “makeup calls”. The handling call was justified, you can’t raise your arm like that and not get the call. And the Pinoe handling wasn’t the same thing because her arm was down in a natural position. The delay call was weak, trifling like many other calls the ref made. the officiating wasn’t very good. But that’s sports. And if the tables were reversed Americans would be freaking the fuck out too.

Zackmaniac 9 months ago“Just kidding — there’s only one newspaper in Canada, and it’s called the Tim Horton’s Gazette.” Tee hee! Lazy stereotypes are fun! Let me try! “Luckily Team USA didn’t go to any movies or places of worship before the Olympics, or they would have been mass-murdered by their own countrymen.” Hey, that was fun! Fucking asshat.

kaickulelrodm 9 months agoFor those who still think that canada got jobbed. Re-watch the match from 3-3 and the extra time periods, canada was outplayed. They were tired. US had the ball on canada’s side most of the time. That’s roughly 45+ minutes that canada failed to score.

philw9 9 months agoTancredi is a thug and she should have been ejected in the first half for that stomp, but the referee missed. She should be barred from their final game. Wambach nailed McLeod and her delays by counting in front of the referee the extra time she was taking and the ref DID warn McLeod earlier. So, Canadians, stop whining, put your big boy/girl pants and move on.

lizalmendra 9 months agoCanada has 1 newspaper?! Really? I understand this is about a soccer game but why be petty about a country’s overall presence? Usually i love buzzfeed’s commentary because it is actually quite neutral, open and overall awesome… But you dude, wow… You just make us want to use the same blanket statements you are using here. “Americans should be so lucky they got to even compete… Being that they’re all so fat” see how ridiculous that sounds Mr. Canada only has one newspaper? Wow what an asshole

superthom 9 months agoHello. Welcome to every football game ever. It wasn’t a handball. It was clearly accidental and giving a penalty was a mistake by the referee. The stamp should have been a red card and the referee missed it, which is understandable. The referee can’t keep an eye on everything going on during the game. It was foul play by the Canadian but the Canadians aren’t complaining about foul play. They’re complaining about poor refereeing decisions, and in this case they’re right.

Kath James 9 months agoActually, even if Canada had been down one player they could have/would have won had the stupid referee calls not been made - Canada out played the US team plain and simple. Funny how the US team had a hand ball first and weren’t called on it, and McLeod should have been given a warning first. The only reason the US team tied the game is because of the referees call.
