Britney Spears is allegedly turning to enemas in a desperate bid to lose 30 pounds before she returns to Vegas in August. The exercise-averse superstar is said to have gotten the idea while reading about her idol Marilyn Monroe. While most doctors agree enemas aren’t an effective weight-loss solution, Britney isn’t the only celebrity to try something crazy and pseudo-scientific in an effort to stay thin.
2. Baby Food
Reese Witherspoon has long been rumored to be a fan of the baby food diet. This diet is exactly what it sounds like: all baby food, all the time. Followers replace the first two meals of the day with about fourteen jars of baby food before eating a healthy dinner.
3. Oatmeal Paste
To look the part of the consumptive prostitute Fantine in Les Miserables, Anne Hathaway shed 25 pounds eating nothing but dried oatmeal paste (and maybe the occasional potato). The restrictive diet may have helped her win an Oscar but looking back on the experience during an interview with Vogue, Anne acknowledged that her diet was “was definitely a little nuts.”
4. Grapefruit Scents
In addition to being a highly active dancer and athlete, Jennifer Lopez allegedly stays slim by sniffing grapefruit oil. She carries a vial of grapefruit oil around with her to smell before meals. While it’s unclear why it works (or if it works in humans) in studies rats exposed to grapefruit scents experienced a reduction in appetite and body weight.
Victoria Beckham subsisted on just five handfuls of food a day after giving birth to her daughter Harper Seven in 2011. Called the Five Hands Diet, the program consists of five fist-sized meals spaced throughout the day.
In 2010, Snooki lost 10 pounds while acting as a spokeswoman for Dr. Siegal’s Cookie Diet. The Jersey Shore star ate six of Dr. Siegal’s special cookies and a sensible dinner every day for five months. Kelly Clarkson, Denise Richards, Jennifer Hudson, and Kim Kardashian are also said to be fans.
Inspired by the cookie diet, Lady GaGa and her ex-boyfriend Luc Carl embarked on their own seemingly indulgent plan called the Drunk Diet. GaGa explained the plan to interviewer in 2011 saying, “I like to drink whiskey and stuff while I’m working. But the deal is, I’ve got to work out every day, and I work out hung over if I’m hungover.” Luc would go on to expand this philosophy into a diet book-cum-memoir titled The Drunk Diet: How I Lost 40 Pounds… Wasted. But by the time it was released GaGa had moved on to new men and presumably new diets.
