The 18 Worst Things For Left-Handed People
I can no longer be silent on the daily oppression of the left-handed community! Hear our pain, world!
1. Spiral Notebooks
Hurts the side of your hand. The worst are the 5-subject with the extra big rings.
2. Writing in a 3-ring binder
You have to do that thing where you fit your hand between the top two, then eventually have to pick it up and fit it in between the bottom two.
3. Only 1 gross lefty glove in gym class
The handsweat of a thousand lefties before you.
4. Only 2 pairs of the green lefty scissors in class, 3 lefty kids.
Scrambling through the scissors to find the ones with the green rubber handles, only to see they’re already all gone.
5. Ballpoint pens don’t work as well because you’re pushing, not pulling the ball
The ink will never flow as well for lefties, so our pens stop up more.
8. iPad Kindle app - left side is back page
This is really annoying - if you prefer to hold it in your left hand, you have to move your hand all the way to the other side to tap. On a real Kindle, page forward is on both sides, thankfully.
9. Driver’s cup holder is for the right hand
So you have to hold your cup with your right hand.
11. Dying sooner, so becoming a zombie sooner
Studies have shown lefties die up to 9 years sooner than righties. At least we’ll get to eat their brains.
12. These desks
College lecture hall desks with postage-stamp sizes desks. You have to twist your back and hold up your arm to use.
13. Measuring cups show you the stupid metric side
The cups/ounces side is for the righties. You have to do that thing where you twist your hole arm around to be able to read ounces.
15. Made for righties
Apparently you can get modified lefty controllers, but maybe you should just go outside.
16. Cord on the credit card machine pen never long enough
Annoying. Annoying. I’m annoyed.
18. For which someone invented THESE
The saddest thing is that all the lefties in the BuzzFeed office now want these. The indignity.

darrenmb 3 weeks ago1.Forgetting the metric debate, wouldn’t you use your stronger hand to DO the pouring rather than hold the measuring cup? I do. I that case the picture is backwards.
2. You’re not supposed to write on the paper in a three-ring binder, dummy. That’s the whole point (or a major part) of a three-ring binder.
3. The drink holder is in the middle. It has nothing to do with left or right. That’s where there’s space for it. -

laylah2 a month agoI find 9 to be a stupid reason. For one, not all cars have the cup holder in the middle, to the right of the driver. My car has the cup-holder on the dashboard, right next to the door, and is on my left side. I can grab it just fine with my left hand, even though I’m a righty. Grabbing a drink doesn’t take any effort besides a concious effort to hold it, as would be with your dominant hand as well. I can see how other things on this list can be an inconvenience, but not number 9. My mom is left handed, and bought many left handed kitchen items and other other tools, so I understand the feeling of not being able to use somethig properly.

20sgirl86 a month agoFor #13 shouldn’t you leave it down on the table or counter while you are putting stuff in it? So you can easily just turn it on the surface to look and see if it’s at the right level. The only time you have to lift it if it’s a powder to shake it to make sure the powder is evened out, but then you can just set it back down to make sure it’s even, and then pour it in. I’ve never measured holding it up. I find it easier to have it sitting down while I am measuring. And #17 happens to right handed people as well.

Angi Clarke a month agoI must be older than a lot of responders here, since the paper/notebook thing was something that I used every day for most of my life—thank goodness for clipboards, when I got the chance, but most of the time, nope! When I learned to use a computer, or did anything else, I went left-handed first, it was normal, and I also have three of four leftie offspring (it’s on their dad’s side, too) so they found that normal. One other thing…a medical situation led me to learning from a surgeon that left-handed people are not necessarily right-brain dominant. I never needed the test to find out which side-dominant I am, but it was an interesting side note.

#13 I’ve always found to be more of a right-handed problem. You pour with your dominant hand (don’t you?), which means if you’re right-handed, the metric side is facing you. If you’re pouring with your left, wouldn’t the non-metric side be facing you? And for the people who say you’re supposed to hold the measuring cup up to see if you’ve measured correctly, no, you’re not. You’re supposed to set it on a level surface. If you hold it, it’s likely not level and therefore the measurement will be slightly off. It probably won’t really matter, not with cooking, but I know in science labs you’re taught to bend down and look because it’s more accurate (at least, that’s what I was told in every lab I’ve had). And no, the handle is not there for you to hold it up to measure. It’s there for you to hold it when you’re pouring stuff out.

jessh6 a month agoSome of these things I agree with. Others not. I live in a country where we drive on the left side of the road… the cup holder thing isn’t an issue. I use the metric system for measuring things… an advantage if printed on the left side, but not really something I’ve taken notice of. The number pad on a keyboard isn’t an issue either, you adapt… and if you’re touch typing your left hand has control of more letters. I just thank jeebus I never had to deal with those desks, because that would’ve driven me nuts! Have a go at writing with your page on an extreme angle, you’ll get less smudgy smudgy up the side of your hand. But ultimately, while many of these things are annoying, left-handed people are incredibly adaptable and can make themselves both-handed and/or ambidextrous at many tasks… a very distinct advantage to right-handed people that have never had to!

Yes, well, when your recipe calls for 1/3 cup of one ingredient, 1 1/2 cups of another, and 1/4 cup of another, are you going to take the time to convert all of those to metric (which often means using a slightly different amount), or just measure them as is? I agree that the metric system makes more sense, but a measuring cup is not a valid starter for that conversation. Non-metric recipe = non-metric measurements, period.
