9 Lessons We've Learned From The Nicki Minaj-Taylor Swift Twitter Fiasco

This was not a cat fight.

    1. If you make a mistake, apologize.

I thought I was being called out. I missed the point, I misunderstood, then misspoke. I'm sorry, Nicki. @NICKIMINAJ

    2. If you're ready to forgive, do so.

That means so much Taylor, thank you. @taylorswift13 ❤️❤️❤️

    3. Don't use an apology as a weapon.

I've always loved her. Everyone makes mistakes. She gained so much more respect from me. Let's move on. https://t.co/mx9pfIdnzT

It's easy to misconstrue an apology as weakness or vulnerability. DON'T! Be thoughtful and compassionate. Don't hold someone's mistakes against them.

    4. If you're a media outlet and you make a mistake, apologize.

An earlier version of our post on Taylor & Nicki used an insensitive juxtaposition of photos. It was a hasty choice—we sincerely apologize.

Better yet, if you're a media outlet pay more attention to how you frame and influence discussions about race.

    5. Intersectionality matters.

    6. Just because two women disagree, doesn't mean they hate each other.

This was not a cat fight. This was not two women hating on each other. This was not some silly argument. Ok, at times it was silly. But at its core, this was a misunderstanding between two women who were standing up for what they believe in.

    7. Triple check your grammar.

I fixed Katy Perry’s tweet that no one could understand http://t.co/Nq0QqKslLg

    8. This was never about pitting women against each other.

there was no need to make an issue out of nicki speaking her mind which affects her and her culture.

Its really a shame that everyone is missing the point Nic is trying to make

I'm not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it. https://t.co/2xOvJzBXJX

Now that the storm has cleared, let's get back to the real problem - the one that Nicki Minaj was talking about all along. Racism in the music industry.

    9. And last but not least...

I think we all learned a very valuable Twitter lesson this week

We can all agree on this, yeah?
