Offensive Halloween: Too Far

Halloween is all fun and games; but domestic violence is not fun and games. At all.

Costumes CAN Hurt Others

NOTE: This is all just makeup.

I saw a post on Facebook of these photos of a girl's costume the other day.

With them, she wrote the caption "I'm going to a Halloween party as a beaten wife :)"

She was a beaten wife for Halloween. A victim of domestic violence, as a costume.

That's officially the most offensive and inappropriate Halloween costume I have ever seen.

What was worse than the actual costume was the comments. There was support for this makeup she was wearing. After stating my case of absurdity and disagreement, I was bombarded with comments yelling at me for taking things too seriously. At least 80% of the comments were in support of her costume, telling me to shut up and for her to "not listen to the haters."

I was told in a comment that "ignorance is bliss" and that I should ignore what I didn't like. Ignorance is bliss. That could not be less correct.

Domestic violence is not something to be taken lightly. This person was making a mockery of a terribly serious situation. Not only was she displaying her ignorance to the world, but she was demonstrating to others that it's okay to do this. It's not.

As a member of society, whether domestic violence has directly affected you or not, it is your responsibility to prevent the perpetuation of this as a normalcy. This caricaturization of brutality towards women only highlights it as a joke, not only allowing it to continue, but making a victim's suffering a joke as well.

Please be conscious about your future Halloween costumes.
