News Anchor’s Emotional Response To Viewer Who Called Her Obese

“If you are at home and talking about the fat news lady, guess what? Your children are probably going to go to school and call someone fat.”

I know, right? Now tell your friends!
News Anchor's Emotional Response To Vi...

2. The bully’s letter:

Hi Jennifer,

It’s unusual that I see your morning show, but I did so for a very short time today. I was surprised indeed to witness that your physical condition hasn’t improved for many years. Surely you don’t consider yourself a suitable example for this community’s young people, girls in particular. Obesity is one of the worst choices a person can make and one of the most dangerous habits to maintain. I leave you this note hoping that you’ll reconsider your responsibility as a local public personality to present and promote a healthy lifestyle.

I guess I get to be the bad guy here, but why is the letter writer referred to as a bully - both by the news anchor and by Buzzfeed? And why are his words unquestionably deemed cruel? His words were indeed critical, but that’s different from bullying or cruel. You people get that, no? Or are we so sensitive that any critical word is equivalent to bullying? If he had written in and mocked her or called her names, I’d agree with the cruelty and bullying charges - but the guy simply wrote in to express his opinion about how he thinks people in public roles should look. You don’t have to agree with him (for the most part, I don’t agree with him), but to make him into a bully? Really? Are people so hypersensitive and soft now? Also, guess what? Obesity is a huge public health issue. It’s not just about optics or “making fun of the fat kid.” It’s actually an epidemic that leads to greater health ills, lower life expectancy and greater health costs for all of us. If we can’t address it because we’re afraid we might hurt the feelings of the obese, then we’re in sad shape as a country - basically a bunch of little kids running around in adult bodies.

      • rachelee 7 months ago

The reason this is bullying is because (a) he’s making an assumption about how people should look when they’re on TV. People come in all shapes and sizes and there’s nothing wrong with heavy people on television. Why have we become a nation of body-nazis? (b) He’s stating that Jennifer is consciously or unconsciously a bad role model for children without recognizing his own hypocrisy. A person who is overly concerned about the way a person on TV looks (if he doesn’t like it, he can turn the channel) is a bad role model for children as well (as Jennifer points out). One of the reasons children have eating problems is because they learn to cope with stress at home and at school by eating. How much stress do you think they have to cope with when they’re dealing with bullies? The bottom line: Jennifer’s weight and the way she looks is NONE of this viewer’s business.

Calling an obese person a derogatory name (“porker” “lardass” “fatso” etc) is bullying. Intimidating them physically or emotionally because of who they are is bullying. Encouraging others to shun or degrade them because of who they are is bullying. Bullying actually has a clear definition. What you, and many others are doing, are equating criticisms and presumptuousness as bullying. That is not the case. Consult a dictionary if in doubt. Stating that the anchor is a bad role model for children is not bullying (especially when the anchor is a public person), it is a value judgment. it might be a value judgment that you disagree with, and that’s fine. But it’s not bullying. It may indeed be none of the viewer’s business, as you state (and I tend to agree with you) what the anchor’s weight is, but it’s not bullying. The reason this gets my dander up is because it seems that the B word is being trotted out for increasingly marginal things these days. It not only turns us into a hyper-sensitive society where no one dare critique anyone, but it also cheapens the very real problem of bullying.

Just because someone chooses something does not make it up for public debate. She can do whatever the hell she wants with her body and it’s none of this guy’s business.  She has zero responsibility to be the perfect image of health just because she’s on TV. If parents don’t want their children exposed to this woman’s obesity, don’t let them watch her broadcast.  Personally I think there are far worse influences to be concerned about than a fat lady on TV. The guy who wrote the letter is a dick. Period.

I’m so glad that my parents brought me up with manners, I do not get when this attitude of just approaching people and saying what you think of them when the opinion was not solicited became in vogue. I’ve had men approach me about my breast size and tell me I would look so much better with implants or wether i had thought about getting implants. Look i know i have small tits, ive had them for 28 years and hated them from the time i knew they should be a lot bigger then what they where. For the most part i have come to terms with them and have accepted my body as it is, however it is always a slap in the face when someone comes up and says shit like that UNSOLICITED. It always astounds me how people feel that there is nothing wrong with any of that. What happened to, if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all?

It amazes me how double standard people are when it come to tv presenters: we see paunchy man doing the weather, oh he’s friendly and fatherly, lol lol lol.
We want more male viewers: add a anchor with huge boobs and lowcut shirt. See those ratings sore!
This lady works on tv: so she’s on heavy side of the scale, ok so WHAT? Isn’t TV suppose to represent all sorts of people? Are we to limit ourselves to bimbos and stick figures in TV industry?
That letter might nettle this anchor lady and raise a sensitive issue but fuck him. This world is wide and varied, it’s time to stop this hypocritical bullshit.

Hear, hear! You go girl! I just wish she broadened her list to include kids who are bullied by society because they enjoy tobacco or are sexually promiscuous or are alcoholics or enjoy texting while driving. Obesity is way more deadly than any of these lifestyles choices. Why shouldn’t they be afforded the same respect?

    • jesse7 7 months ago

The so called bully was just fighting against the obesity epidemic :sarcasm:

    • i hate how people that see some fat people as unhealth im 220 pounds and age 23 i dont look big for my size yet my doctor says im the healtiest person he has seen who doesnt fit the typical “healthy body profile” i have perfect blood presure and my body is is as healthy as can be. skinny doesnt always mean healthier

    • brijazz 7 months ago

The letter was sent privately. It was the anchor’s choice to make it public. How do you think this woman’s doctor describes her weight? “Obese” is a medical term, and the author of the letter did not use it in a derogatory term.

    • Alyssa 7 months ago

The writer of that letter needs to go back to Kindergarten and learn some basic manners: If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

Being an asshole is a choice.

    • kevinnivek 7 months ago

I’d have sexual relations with her, if you know what i mean. You go girl!

    • amjensen410 7 months ago

Here’s the thing people, even if obesity is a choice: IT DOESN’T MATTER. We all make choices as far as our health and appearances go that could be criticized. For example, I have a few crooked teeth. I could choose to get them straightened but I haven’t. Could it cause health problems? Sure, crooked teeth are harder to floss and keep clean. Do I think an email from a stranger telling me that he’s sad to see my teeth haven’t improved is appropriate? HELL NO. That role should only be taken by a truly concerned family member or very close friend.  The sad fact in this situation is that someone who doesn’t know her or even regularly watch her TV show and pretend to know her wrote her a terribly rude and out of place email under the guise of concern for her and children who watch her. The excuse is paper thin - it’s clear that he he wrote the letter to be rude so someone that he perceived as weaker than himself. That’s what we call a bully, folks. And so it was the man who wrote the letter who is being socially irresponsible and a bad role model for children everywhere.

    • rgrogers42 7 months ago

Being obese is 99.9% of the time, a choice. The colour of your skin, hair, your sexual preference etc is not a choice. To see it any other way is to make excuses for being lazy, undisciplined etc. I’m overweight primarily because I don’t take enough care of myself, that’s my fault, my responsibility. If someone were to call me fat, so what? They’re right.

    • 2themaxe 7 months ago

      GO YOU!!

    • grega5 7 months ago

I couldn’t even get through the whole video with this whiney woman. The viewer was right.
It isn’t bullying, it’s the truth.  Oh yeah and what other way do you measure obesity besides on a doctors chart? You can’t rationalize your weight away. Yikes.

    • Nicole B. 7 months ago

What a loser. I wonder how many male public figures get these kinds of letters? Fat shaming is acceptable and considered noble in America and it’s disgusting. Mind your own business, assholes! Women shouldn’t have to be desirable TO YOU to read the goddamn news.
