For everyone saying that art school won't get you a job… All of my friends who went to University for “English”,”Humanities”,”Philosophy”,”Political Science”, and other programs graduated without being able to find jobs and had to go do post grad equaling 4 years expensive University tuition, plus another 1-2 years of post grad tuition. I went to an art and design school for 3 years and graduated with multiple job offers, currently work full and part time, and I can start paying off my debt now instead of letting it accumulate for several years. Art School isn't the better choice, University programs aren't the better choice, it's the students themselves that determines whether they will be successful at what they do. Usually a sweeping generalization about a group of people has an -ism associated with it.

For everyone saying art school gets you loads of debt etc: you do know there ARE art and design colleges within public universities, right? I go to one and my program is accredited. There are plenty of expensive art schools that aren't accredited. My tuition still isn't the cheapest (even living at home with my parents) but it is half of what I would pay if I went to a private art/design school.

thing with kids going to art school these days is…most of them just want a quick buck. Most art students end up in jobs that have almost nothing to do with art, just cuz they got fed up with living at home and gave in. You have to want it badly enough and be good enough either with your drawing skill or your creativity to make it in any way shape or form. I already know I'm not going to be a freelance illustrator. I'd be happy working in the graphics department at some magazine. At least it's art.

Awesome way to be humble/self-deprecating about the stereotypes associated with art school

If you know anything about art schools you'd know that your child being interested is really scary. Most of them are for profit and unless you're really lucky with scholarships or rich parents you'll be paying tens of thousands in student loans for years after graduating. I'd remind my kid that an artist doesn't need to go to school to really make it. Wish someone had told me.

Lord knows I've been illustrating for years now… One doodle leads to another and the next thing you know you're doing comic strips and entertaining ideas of creating a children's book. It's a serious addiction.
