  • The scale used for large quakes is not usually the Richter but the Moment Magnitude Scale, in which each whole number value is about 32X as powerful as the value below it.

  • geology isn't my field, but my understanding is that the richter scale is logarithmic.
    therefore, if the japan quake was a 9, and the virginia quake was 5.8, the japanese quake was (10^9)/(10^5.8)=1585x fold bigger.
