I think people are missing an important factor. One of the things guys probably appreciated about nerd culture is that it wasa”guy” thing. We don’t really even acknowledge that men like having spaces where women are out of the picture. That’s notaconcept we really understand anymore. ButIthink it’s at play here. That’s what all the judging is about. That’s how men interact-testing each other’s worthiness, holding each other toahigh standard to make sure you belong. It’s not silly; it’s essential. On the other hand it’s sad, because opening up toabroader more mainstream audience sounds likeareally good thing, not to mention female attention. ButIthink whatIsaid above helps explain what would otherwise be really, really puzzling. Bringing girls in changes things. It introduces other dynamics.
