Meet this new nematode species -- It's called Halicephalobus Mephisto, which sounds like something that would alarm exorcists if uttered near a Catholic church. It lives 2.2 miles underground, a huge amount of space below the deepest known creatures.
The discovery was made by geomicrobiologist Tullis Onstrott of Princeton University, and nematologist Gaetan Borgonie of Beligium's University of Ghent. The worm was first found in the depths of a South African gold mine. We'd compare it to a metaphorical gold mine as well, if it wasn't less like "gold" and more like an evil-looking worm-monster made of nightmares.
The team that discovered the devil worm found evidence that they've existed for thousands of years, but coincidentally, only just began to devour our dreams today.
