The one I remember IRL was in the deep South, where I saw a Big Lots sign with the lights out on the “L.” Ouch. I go inside and say to the checker, older black lady: “Hey, the L is out on the sign out front.” She grunts in response, dismissive. “So, um, now it looks like it says, ‘Bigots.’” Silence. Then she literally runs to the intercom, “CHARLIE! WE NEED TO FIX THE SIGN OUT FRONT RIGHT NOW!” And she takes off to the lighting area of the store.

  They may be, but since it seems like at least one letter is out on these types of signs a good 3/4 of the time, I’d give them the benefit of the doubt. Even if they ARE photoshopped, there’s no reason why they couldn’t have happened.
