Top 10 Underappreciated Female Disney/Pixar Characters

These ladies deserve more love.

10. This hongreh woman from Aladdin (Aladdin)

This character only briefly appears during the opening number “One Jump Ahead,” where she bursts into the scene to proclaim that she thinks that Aladdin is, in her own words, “rather tasty,” despite being a poor street rat. Personally, I think this could have been an angle that the film could have explored more. Should Aladdin choose the beautiful Jasmine, or rather fall in love with this mysterious doting Agrabahian woman? I guess we shall never know.

9. Sid's Mom (Toy Story)

This character is so amazing that she didn’t even need to show up on screen to be a worthy addition to this list. Granted, she only had two lines (a confused “WHAT WAS THAT?” in response to daughter Hannah, and, of course, the mood-killing “SID, YOUR POP-TARTS ARE READY!”), but there is so much MORE I want to know about her. For starters, why is she letting her son perform deranged experiments on toys and purchase expensive-looking explosives? What does she look like? And why does she sound so spaced out? Perhaps her wallpaper provides all the answers we need…

8. Frozone's Wife (The Incredibles)

Another off-screen wonder. As wonderful as superheroes are, there always has to be someone around to keep them in check. Luckily, Frozone’s wife is up for the task. We can only hope that if Pixar comes out with an Incredibles sequel in the near future, she will make her long-awaited on-screen debut.

7. Lady Kluck (Robin Hood)

Maid Marian’s plump sidekick. She really didn’t have much of a purpose in the story but I always loved this scene of her kicking ass and taking no prisoners NFL style against a gaggle of Prince John’s goons.

6. Deb (& Flo) (Finding Nemo)

If I were forced to spend my entire life inside of a dinky fish tank I would probably imagine that I had a twin brother or sister too. In many ways Deb is one of the more tragic characters in the story, especially when the tank become so dirty that she can no longer find her sister Flo.

5. Mad Madame Mim (The Sword in the Stone)

This weirdo bideardo has the honor of being classified as the villain of the movie despite appearing on screen for less than 20 minutes. What a glorious 20 minutes they are though. During this time, she nearly kills Arthur, twirls around her cottage incessantly, and epically cheats during a Wizard’s Duel with Merlin (she didn’t say anything about PURPLE dragons). Plus, anyone who takes joy in describing herself as an ugly old creep is worthy of adoration.

4. Tour Guide Barbie (Toy Story 2)

Although Barbie became a fully fleshed-out character in Toy Story 3, her first appearance in Toy Story 2 was equally as memorable and enjoyable. This helpfully perky doll guided Buzz and co. as they traversed the treacherous aisles of Al’s Toy Barn, showing off impressive driving skills and an expansive knowledge of many toy products. She then reappeared after the blooper roll, waving guests goodbye and reminding them to throw out popcorn containers. At the end she’s finally had ENUF smiling and complains about her jaw being exhausted, earning the sympathy of anyone who has ever had to work a customer service job.

3. Andy's Mom (Toy Story)

Like Sid’s Mom, Andy’s Mom is mostly pointless and peripheral but she just seems so cool, especially in the first movie. Andy’s birthday party is definitely THE place to be. I mean, come on, she has both cool ranch AND BBQ chips. She also rocks a fashionable pair of floral pants that she models down the runway before ruthlessly crushing a green army man. It was his fault for getting in her way, really.

2. Nani (Lilo & Stitch)

In my opinion, Nani is the ultimate heroine of any Disney movie. After experiencing the tragic death of both of her parents, Nani, at the age of NINETEEN, becomes the legal guardian of her rambunctious kid sister Lilo. Things only get worse after she mistakenly allows Lilo to adopt the evil space alien Stitch as a pet. Juggling multiple responsibilities, Nani is frequently stressed but fights her hardest to be a good sister (and fill-in mom) to Lilo and prevent her from being taken into foster care. Throughout it all, Nani is resilient, brave, and also frequently funny (her threatening to bake Lilo into a pie is a highlight). As an additional plus, she’s also probably one of the only Disney characters who is shaped like an actual human being.

1. Nakoma (Pocahontas)

As many times as I’ve watched Pocahontas, I've never quite been able to figure out what exactly the point of Nakoma is, but nevertheless I’m glad that she was inserted into the story because she’s such a hilarious background presence. From the beginning of the movie you can totally tell that she’s jealous of her supposed bff Pocahontas (watch for her epic eye roll when Poca majestically jumps off the cliff), and it only gets worse as the story progresses. Case in point: when she rats out Poca for meeting up with John Smith because she was concerned about her safety. Yeah right. As if this weren’t bad enough, at the end of the movie when Poca and John Smith are having their emotional farewell, the movie cuts to Nakoma sobbing her eyes out like this was the most romantically tragic thing she’s ever seen. What a desperate bid for screentime. The next time you watch Pocahontas pay attention to this camera hog and the movie will instantly become ten times funnier.
