Davine S. 6 months agoGuys, if you want to know what’s so wrong about 50 Shades - or if you just need an antidote to the hysteria about it - PLEASE read this incredible recap by Jennifer Armintrout. (Note: there’s a warning when you click the link, but this isn’t spam - it’s just because of the “mature content”). The chapter recaps are hilarious - I laughed til I cried - but they also do a great job of showing how dangerously anti-feminist this book is. Not just “against the feminist movement” but “against women”. I can’t even express how freaked out I am that this book is so popular: not only is the writing irredeemably appalling, but it also says a lot about how unempowered women still are, if they relate to this bland, naive, unintelligent and self-sabotaging character. I could go on and on about how unsettling and wrong it is, but I really just recommend that you give this blog a try and see for yourself. I don’t think it’s pedophilia because there’s nothing in reference to being attracted to the baby wearing it. The grey tie is like saying “I’m Christian Grey’s son”. But it’s disturbing on so many other levels. I’ve been reading these chapter recaps and I can’t believe what has happened to women that this shit has become so popular. It’s NOT “empowerment” - the Anastasia character is naive and keeps talking about how uncomfortable she is in the situation - she can’t knowingly consent to what is happening because she’s too fucking stupid to even understand basic questions. (She’s a college student without a computer or an email address, she has never kissed anyone or even held hands, and she has never heard of S&M. She shouldn’t be asked to choose to a flavour of icecream, let alone consent to a violent sexual relationship.) Christian Grey tells her “you can leave if you want to” but then he pressures her to do exactly what he wants. It’s an extremely dysfunctional, abusive relationship based on coercion and manipulation and a twisted power dynamic. So this is what women fantasise about, now? Between these books and all the GOP’s comments about rape and the fact that it’s getting harder for women to get basic medical care and birth control, I seriously feel like I’m back in the 19th Century. WHAT HAPPENED?! [Read the recaps. You won’t regret it; they’re hilarious even though they’re really disturbing.]
