10 Of The Best Hip Hop DJ/Producer Drops Ever

Drops, to most people, are the annoyingly ubiquitous samples that pop up time and again at the beginning rap songs to let you know who produced it, who the DJ is, or maybe even just who's in the studio. When done right, though, they can be fun, funny, addictive, or sometimes all of the above. Here are some of the best.

1. DJ Fresh

Underrated Bay Area producer DJ Fresh has one of the lushest drops ever. It works really well with his layered, piled-with-synths production style.

2. DJ Clue

CLUEMANATTIIIIIIIIIIII

This delay-laden shout was ubiquitous on '90s New York rap radio. Clue had tons of mixtapes (not literally tons, but literally tapes) and made himself an ever-present figure on the tracks he chose and in the scene at large.

3. Trap-A-Holics

This Trap-A-Holics drop has it's own meme and McLovin' tie-in and everything. Assuming they got the movie trailer guy for this one.

4. Mike Will Made It

The producer of the moment ("Bands a Make Her Dance", "No Lie", "Turn On the Lights", "Pour it Up") from Atlanta whose drop sounds wonderfully melted.

5. Harry Fraud

New York's Harry Fraud, producer of French Montana's dizzying anthem "Shot Caller", decided to make his drop en Español.

6. Clinton Sparks/"Get Familiar"

Lots of drops use children or sultry female voices. Clinton Sparks went with a nasal-sounding kid. It works somehow? Not sure why.

7. Lex Luger

Most drops are meant for blatant (and repeated) self-promotion, but Lex Luger's signature is subtler. It's just an ascending synth stutter that has featured on some of the biggest (and most copied) productions of the last few years.

8. Drumma Boy

A longtime favorite of Gucci Mane, the Memphis producer is also behind the hits "Put On" and "No Hands". I'm pretty sure he wants you to listen to the track.

Legendary mixtape DJ. "Dramatic!"

10. Bangladesh

Producer of "A Milli" among many others. Keeps it simple, but it sounds a bit like it's been garbled by a fax machine. In a good way.
