While originally created by James Gall in 1885, the Gall-Peters Projection came into public consciousness in 1967 when Arno Peters championed it as a more accurate representation of the size of countries. michaelm60 3 months agoI think you’re confusing “trying to gain some perspective” with “hating on it” (whatever that means). I would suggest that the country would be better if you, in fact, left. I do not care if you let the door hit you or not on the way out.

I think it’s best not to idealize the US, which this article seems to be helping with. The US is not the biggest bestest country evar. It’s large and has a diverse population (the diversity of which is often overlooked and the people who make it diverse are often mistreated), and we have a shit ton of flaws. Pretending we don’t is disingenuous and why the worldwide opinion of the US isn’t so hot.

TheChronicOne 3 months agoCool! Thanks for this. I dig geography and a lot of times simply looking at a map or globe doesn’t do the size of certain places justice. It’s neat to be able to compare the sizes and gain that perspective.

patticake1601 3 months agoNone of you got the gist of this did you? America has always appeared larger than it really is on maps. My geography teacher in primary school waaaay back in the late 70’s pointed this out to us. Most maps were made in the US and America was always larger than a majority of countries on those maps.

Sweet lord this was idiotic, almost any way you look at it. The last time I checked, even 2nd graders know that the US isn’t the biggest country in the world, and since when did geographic size have any damn thing to do with international influence and power? There’s a reason why we have Japanese electronics and cars and not, say, Russian ones.

Maybe you think it’s idiotic and irrelevant, but I happen to think it’s really neat and interesting. I know most of the maps we use are rather distorted but it’s weird to see it laid out so clearly. The US is a big country, but most of the countries we tend to think of as small aren’t really nearly as small as we think.

SitaSky 3 months agoThis is stupid, the only one that was shocking was the Alaska one but that’s still the United States, I really don’t think it should matter the size of a country, it’s the population. Considering there are 7 billion people in the world roughly and 2 billion of them live in India and China it’s really amazing that Americans get so much attention or it seems like we do. We are only 312 million roughly.
