billp13 3 months agoI didn’t know American maps cut Asia in half to put the Americas in the centre of the picture. Not surprising though when you think of it. This kind of project is important in showing the actual sizes of places relative to each other. The Mercator Projection always underrepresents Africa, and the flat-projection versions shrink the Africa, South America and India to a fraction of their real sizes.

Trey Patch 3 months agoThe United States maybe not be the largest country in terms of geography, but it is currently the world’s largest economy, the third most most populous nation, and it accounts for 42% of the world total military spending.

Such things are in turn deceptive, and worrying. Third most populous it may be, but the second and first most populous outstrip it by miles, and there are a lot of other nearly-as / significant-fraction-of nations besides. The US makes up something like 4.2% of total human population on earth. Which should make the third stat wholly terrifying - you have therefore something like 10x the global avereage defence spend. Why, fer Pete’s sake?! Incidentally, if we count the EU as a rival (both are federal superstates, when viewed objectively; both Texas and France counting as smaller parts of the whole, both with deprecated border controls and no longer having their own currency, etc…), then you’re only second. That’s right, the liddle ol’ uropeen union has a greater GDP than the USA. Which suggests that per capita, and per square mile, you’re not all that great shakes any more. (In fact, in terms of per-cap, you’re 6th). You do make up a good quarter of the world economic activity however, I’ll give you that. How much of it is high speed automated trading, though, who knows…

mitchellb4 4 months agoI’m not sure I see anything in these pictures to support the premise that the U.S. is “an overcompensating, attention-seeking brat.” We’re bigger than most countries, smaller than others. So what? We produce more cars, cell phones, patents, medical devices, doctors, research papers, wheat, corn, soy, beef, milk, cheese, rice, tanks, fighter jets, helicopters, foreign assistance, relief shipments, blockbuster movies, and rock-and-roll albums than almost any 40 countries combined. Our “poor” people eat more hamburgers in a day than all of Pyongyang and Kinshasa will eat in a decade. If anything, much of the rest of the world is an underperforming, handout-seeking mooch. Where does that show on the map?

Er, looks the same to me, apart from a slightly different projection that means it’s stretched vertically instead of horizontally? Want to clue us in on the fine detail I’m missing? Unless of course the idea is to cause sectarian drama over the ownership of Kashmir, in which case, take it elsewhere, I/we honestly couldn’t give a shit. (Heck, I think the best resolution would be to take that “toy” away from both of you, send you to bed without supper, and allow it to become independent and self governing because neither India or Pakistan will be satisfied if the other bunch are allowed to keep it, or even an even 50/50 split of it. May as well piss both of you off over a common cause)
