Sally Ride Is Dead At 61
Sally Ride, the first American woman to enter space, has died from cancer at age 61.
Ride became the first woman to join a NASA space mission when the Challenger launched in 1983. She died on July 23, after battling pancreatic cancer for a year and a half.
Ride joined NASA in 1978, after responding to a newspaper advertisement. After leaving NASA, she was committed to inspring young people, and young women in particular, to pursue the sciences. In 2010, she founded the Sally Ride Science Institute, an organization committed to that cause.

She proved to girls everywhere that you can thrive in what was once a male dominated career, that they are worth more than looking pretty and that they could think science was cool. Her sexual orientation didn’t matter; it was the person she was. Buzzfeed Shift should have more stories about women that empower and change the world than the bullshit nail polish reviews and stupid “25 cats that make funny faces.”
