From the early 1900s to mid-1950s, mascara didn’t come in a tube — it came in a cute little box with a big brush. I can’t imagine how you’d put it on without making a big mess.

I once heard the name Maybelline came from the mascara inventor’s sister’s name, Mabel, plus vaseline (because mascara was originally black stuff mixed with vaseline?).. but now that I write that down it sounds really dubious

In case you’re curious, you applied mascara then it the same way you’d apply it now. It’s just a different shaped applicator that you’d have to re-prime rather than rotating. Hold it under a lash while the eye is open and looking upwards and then close your eyes. The real pain in the neck was adding water. They had cream mascaras too, however. But to put the modern methods in perspective: a cap comb (which was similar to the modern wand and shown above) appeared in the July 1939 issue of Popular Science! The cap and the pre-saturated mascara made everything easier!
