I knew a woman who worked in a classroom for students with behavioral problems that had a booth like this. I can understand how it would be startling for some people to see something like this in a classroom, but as she explained it to me, they’re used as a place for the student to calm down and have a moment to themselves, not as a place for punishment. Yes, a bad teacher could abuse it, but that doesn’t mean that such booths shouldn’t be allowed or that they’re not useful tools for children with an inability to control their emotions. Think about times when you’ve had a really strong emotion and imagine having that emotion in a classroom where you not only have no control over the situation but you’re also unable to control yourself the way most others can. Think about what you might be capable of doing to yourself and to the people around you. A quiet, padded booth where you can be alone and rage and cry and shout as much as you want to might help you feel better and certainly keep you from hurting anyone or getting into serious trouble.
