    1. Rooftop Movies - Perth, Western Australia

    Part of Perth's annual Fringe Festival, this movie pop-up takes place atop a six storey building in the CBD on Roe Street, complete with retro decor and squishy bean bag seats. The programme includes classics such as Labyrinth, as well as new releases such as By The Sea (Brad and Angelina's first co-starring role since Mr and Mrs Smith).

    Rooftop Movies runs until Jan 21st.

    2. Moonlight Cinema - Brisbane, Queensland

    On the lawns of New Farm Park beside the Brisbane Powerhouse Museum, this Moonlight Cinema screens new release flicks and classics on alternate sessions. Go for a "glam grass" ticket, which for $30 seats you on a bean bed in an ~exclusive~ area. Or you could just sprawl on a that old picnic blanket that lives in the boot of your car.

    The Moonlight Cinema Brisbane runs until March.

    3. The Shadow Electric - Melbourne, Victoria

    The Shadow Electric is a rather eclectic take on outdoor cinema. It takes place in a courtyard of Abbotsford Convent, a creative hub 4km outside of Melbourne's CBD. The seats are made to mimic old-school director's chairs, and the programme stretches from box office hits to documentaries such as the Australian premiere of Blur: New World Towers. There's even a ping pong table to entertain yourself before your film.

    The Shadow Electric runs until March 9.

    Overlooking Lake Burley Griffin from Commonwealth Park, Canberra's Openair Cinema screens movies by night, but by day watch out for performances from local and emerging artists - acts including The Cat Empire have formerly graced the stage. If mainstream cinema is too ~basic~ for you, Canberra'a National Film and Sound Archive might be a better bet. The 1966 Teenage Dream night includes a rare showing of Funny Things That Happen Down Under, starring Olivia Newtown-John.

    This Openair Cinema is quite literally the best seat in the house in terms of Sydney's harbour views. It's easy to get distracted by the scenery behind the big screen, so pick a film that you'll be surely ~captivated~ by. Besides that, there are plenty of food options, a fully licensed bar, and ice cream sandwiches to be had.

    The St George Openair Cinema runs until February 19.

    If you're in the southern part of the NT, the weather is scorching hot right now. But up north it's the wet season, so cinema lovers, you're going to have to wait a little while for your outdoor movie fix. Set in tropical gardens on the edge of Darwin Harbour, the Deckchair Cinema is run by the Darwin Film Society seven nights a week in the dry season from April to November. The programme ranges from family-friendly flicks to Australian and eclectic foreign films.

    Deckchair Cinema re-opens on April 20th.

    Held in the lush surrounds of Wollongong's Botanic Gardens, the Sunset Cinema is a great excuse to escape the city. There are also food and drink offerings aplenty, with wood-fired pizza, American classics from the Nighthawk Diner, and 4Pines craft beer.

    The IMB Bank Sunset Cinema runs until February 27.

    Every Friday and Saturday night, the Eat Street Markets add a big screen to their dining experience. Drive-in or walk-in and sit on one of their comfy "moon chairs". Grab food from the American retro-style diner to complete the experience.

    This Heritage Park cinema in Sydney's northern suburb of Castle Hill has a few fancy touches. Think exclusive Messina choc tops, a licensed bar and live entertainment before the movie. If you want to go all out, there's VIP Bell tents for hire for up to eight people, complete with a private butler.

    Set in the garden of a beautiful art-deco building in Mosman Park, surrounded by tree-lined walls, you could easily believe you were sitting in the grounds of a castle at Camelot Outdoor Cinema. Facilities are pretty scarce however, so come prepared with snacks, cushions, and blankets to comfy-up your deckchair.
