stuartk a year agoA) I don’t think the rod would be able to “fall” since the top part would prevent the bottom part from falling downwards. Despite the optical allusion it should be falling, you have to remember it’s essentially standing on itself. B). If the angle did not change, I don’t think it would affect the rod. Again, the rod is standing on itself. Changing the height of the portal after the fact would merely affect how easy/how possible it would be to get the rod back out if you were to unsolder it. I believe if the portal height was changed to be longer than the beam in any way, it would be the same as C. C). After some thought, I don’t think the rod would become infinite. The portals don’t serve to create new material, just move it. It seems like an immediate pressure would be put on the rod, either snapping it at the solder point, or being launched out of the new portal as a circle.

robertb30 a year ago1. Troll-science does not deserve the headache it gave me. 2. When you solder the two ends together, it would make a loop-type thing. Moving the portal closer would cause it to snap at some point, just like putting a metal pole under a car crusher. 3. I think moving the portal causes the world to end and the anti-Christ to appear. Mostly because logic and physics are thrown out the window with this one. The discussion would revolve around where it stops coming out of the orange portal and starts going into the blue portal. I don’t actually believe there is an answer to that one in this case. 4. Troll science does not deserve the headache it has caused me.

capjak dippy a year ago1. the pipe would fall till it reached its speed of terminal velocity then continue at this pace
2. the pipe would bend/break or the portal would be unable to move… if it did the pipe would break/bend
3. the pipe would be split at the area of greatest tension. most likely the point of soldering. thus making 2 pieces as it would break or 1 bent piece depending on location of the portal.
this is based on the idea that the portal contains no spacial dimension and gravity equal to that of earth is also involved. -

mattc29 a year agoI assumed the portal is a 0-dimensional object, never containing any part of anything pushed through it. A. Gravity continues to act on the metal bar, and the portals conserve momentum, so it continues to accelerate “downward” until it reaches terminal velocity, and “spin” forever after.
B. When you move the second portal closer, you’re presumably exerting infinite force on the bar. Assuming that there is no space in the portal, and the entire length of bar has to be present in real space, the more it “pushes” in one direction to try and achieve maximum length outside the portal, the more it pushes in the opposite direction as well. The metal has a finite structural strength, so it would shear/ break. Similar to trying to smash two ends of a circle together. If the portal has no area, then it is essentially two walls you’re pushing together with halves of a metal bar sticking out of each side.
C. If you instantly moved the portal, and the portal has no space (ie doesn’t actually contain any part of the iron, merely acts as a doorway) the metal falls through the blue side and pops out the orange. -

Code Marshmallow a year agoQuite simple. It’s a game. Valve wouldn’t let this happen. Done and done.

paradiddle a year agoGenerally the game doesn’t let you move a portal when something is in it, or if you do it just gets gently pushed out, right?

michaelKatic a year agoI you tried to move the orange portal down what happens is the only good question. I think you would be unable to and the pole would be holding the portals at their initial position. That would be cool.

MrMoustachio a year agoWhen you move the orange portal, the pipe is sliced, leaving you with a pipe the same length as the original, except now it has a weld in the middle. Also, if it was falling before you moved the orange portal, the pipe would come flying out of the orange one. The pipe is not infinitely long. It is only like 10 feet by the look of it. really, it is easier to think of it as a pipe with two cuts: ()—S—() This is the initial state.
()—-S-() This is the pipe having fallen a foot. ()—S-s This is the pipe after moving the orange portal. A new cut has been added.

U You just have to keep in mind that portals conserve both mass and volume. We are just perceiving the tube as infinitely long. -
