GuillermoxF's Top Ten Tracks Of 2014

Is it me or has everyone been posting how horrible 2014 was? Well, it was not much better when it came to music. I asked people for their favorite songs of the year and this year people drew blanks. It was "Mehh..." and some of the big songs of the year were released in 2013... #Timber. Well, here is hoping 2015 is a better year for you and for music.

    10. "Me And My Broken Heart" By Rixton

This track was the iTunes (remember that?) Single of the Week back in March. I remember only downloading the song because I thought they were good looking guys. Then I pressed play and I could not think of where I had heard this song structure before. There was a tweet ripping on the band for stealing it from Matchbox Twenty's lead vocalist Rob Thomas first single "Lonely No More" but after further inspection the band cited the song. Sure they might only have one hit under their belts or possibly ever... but "Me And My Broken Heart" was what was needed in a spring that took forever to warm up.

    9. "Boom Clap" By Charli XCX

Sure it was over played but you have to remember how desperate pop radio was for something exciting. Charli XCX finally had her first solo hit with "Boom Clap" and everything aligned like the "Fault In Our Stars" (I still need to read that book). Can someone explain what part of "I Love It" by Icona Pop Charli XCX does not sing?! The song was written for Hilary Duff but they did not think it was cool enough to sing. Good thing for Charli because it was stuck in a lot of our heads for the latter part of the year. Big hopes for Charli in 2015. Her new album "Sucker" was just released and please listen to it if you have not had the chance.

"Broom! Clap! I'm in me mum's car. The beat goes on and on! Get out me car!"

    8. "Stolen Dance" By Milky Chance

Although the name of the artist makes me uncomfortable, "Stolen Dance" was another huge song that was released over a year ago in its home country. From Tove Lo's "Habits", Bastille's "Pompeii", and really anything by Sam Smith, these songs first hit their markets last year before coming stateside. "Stolen Dance" is hipster enough to grow a mustache but city enough to play in a club. The vocals on the track are stellar and the guitar is a melodic groove.

    7. "Chandelier" By Sia

After writing songs for Rihanna, Beyonce, and Britney Spears for the last couple of years, Sia was finally back to face the music as a solo artist. Although she did not use her face at all. She instead opted the brilliant marketing plan of not showing her face but her signature platinum blonde bob instead.

"Chandelier" was a song that made you think and sing with it all at the same time. It reminds me of the week I spent in Hollywood this year. The best week of the year because I spent it with my best friends and doing all the crazy once in a lifetime things that happen on Sunset Boulevard.

    6. "Maps" By Maroon 5

Damn it Maroon 1-4 and Adam Levine! Why won't you let me hate you? "Maps" would not get stuck out of my head. Took me a couple of months to actually give the track a try but it was worth it. Pure pop that almost makes you forget that "The Voice" is still on t.v. "The map that leads to YoOOOOooUUuu!"

    5. "2 On" By Tinashe feat. SchoolBoy Q

One of the true breakouts of 2014, Tinashe went from a Justin Bieber opening act with her girl group to the musical promise of 2015. "2 On" reminded me of Aaliyah, mid 2000s Ciara and Cassie (if she ever went on to a successful second album). The beat is fresh and the snaps are on. Her live performances are exciting and brings us back to a time where pop stars danced and put on a show. Although the term "2 On" did not go on and live in slang infamy like Tinashe would have hoped, it was still a jam. Take that back, maybe kids do say "2 On" to mean "Turnin' Up" or "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It". Tinashe does not just stand there and Instagram-pose, she goes on. It also helps she is my favorite writer's, Mmuuse, favorite of 2014.

    4. "Don't" By Ed Sheeran

The track and album Justin Timberlake should have made last year. Sorry, "The 20/20 Experience" but this was it. The vocals, the lyrics, the anguish! "X" marked Sheeran's spot in the pop culture landscape as more than Taylor Swift's friend and the guy who may or may not have been canoodling with Selena Gomez. But remember this song was "Cry Me A River" 2014. It was about Ellie Goulding cheating on him with Niall Horan of One Direction. "Don't f--- with my love" indeed.

    3. "Shake It Off" By Taylor Swift

The date was August 18, 2014. It was when Taylor Swift announced to the world she was going full on pop (wait, you mean she already wasn't?). I was sad to hear this because back in my MySpace days, Taylor was the first country artist I listened to regularly. She premiered the "Shake It Off" video right after the announcement. It started playing and I was watching it through my fingers as I covered my eyes. Stop Taylor! You're being awkward to be awkward. The video ended and I thought "WTF, just happened?" Then I pressed play again.

You know when you hear horrible new slang words and you say them to be ironic but then you actually keep saying them? That is what "Shake It Off" was to the world. So props to you Taylor, for not only being the person with more best friends than me, but for making the best song named "Shake It Off" since Mariah Carey in 2005.

    2. "Don't Tell Em" By Jeremih feat. YG

The kid brother to Kid Ink and Chris Brown's "Show Me", "Don't Tell Em" incorporated a 90s Boystown anthem "Rhythm Is A Dancer" and the previously mentioned track to remind us the Columbia College Chicago attendee was still relevant. Although he has been acting a muck in fine establishments including Fuddruckers or your local airport, "Don't Tell Em" is a reminder this Windy City talent will hopefully get it together in 2015 and bring us great new tracks.

    1. "Break Free" By Ariana Grande

I know what you're thinking: "What Ariana Grande song will Guillermo chose to be in his Top Ten Tracks?" Well leave it to "Break Free" to come at the top of not only the Ariana Grande songs of 2014 but the overall winner for "Top Track of 2014." There were plenty of contenders to choose from. There was the lead single "Problem" featuring Iggy Azalea (thank god they decided not to go with the original version featuring SIU Cali's performers The Ying-Yang Twins), the "Lady Marmalade"-lite collaboration and Beats commercial, "Bang, Bang" with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj or the fall 2014 banger "Love Me Harder" with what seems like a product placement duet with The Weeknd. Also, do not forget the epic collaboration with Major Lazer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack "All My Love".

"Break Free" was an anthem for all. How many times did you screech "THIS IS THE PART WHEN I SAY..", just today?! None? Well, I did at least three times today. Zedd dropped the beat and Ari provided the vocals. I can't count the number of times I ran to this track on the track. I would start it over and over because it pumped me up and made me want to work harder. Sure the lyrics don't make sense:

    "I only wanna die alive

Never by the hands of a broken heart

Don't wanna hear you lie tonight

Now that I've become who I really are"

WHAT? Oh well, she might look the same every time. So what? Consistency is key! The song played everywhere as soon as it was released and for good reason. It was great hearing Grande on a song where she was the only featured vocalist. "Break Free" was 2014 because of the mixture of the message and the music.
