This is Adani.
They want to build a coal port at Abbot Point
on the Great Barrier Reef coast.
They built another coal port and power plant in Mundra, India.
And things didn’t go so well.
Locals were initially hired, but fired as soon as Adani had acquired the land.
It decimated the local fishing industry
They promised none of the area’s important mangroves would be destroyed...
Now it looks like this.
They dredged the sea and dumped it on to the mangroves.
And built walls that stopped water reaching the mangroves, leaving them to dry up and die.
As soon as they’d destroyed the mangroves, they claimed the lands to use as wastelands.
The walls meant an entire village was flooded.
Yep, they flooded a village.
And caused salinity to enter the groundwater.
The local salt farmers used to have a thriving industry too.
Now the salt is covered in coal pollution.
Adani also has serious questions about its humanitarian record.
An article in the Sydney Morning Herald heard stories of workers, including children, who were frequently overworked and paid less than minimum wage.
Somehow, there’s more. They also have a documented history of bribery, theft and corruption.
And a new report shows their corporate structure includes corporate tax havens in the Cayman Islands, fraud allegations and very murky ownership. Documents have revealed Mr Adani himself seems to have a SECRET BROTHER WHO MIGHT ACTUALLY OWN ABBOT POINT.
And remember. This #WorstCompanyEver promises it’ll be just fine if they go right ahead and build a huge coal port here.
