Battling Bare is a group providing solidarity for families of soldiers suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). They post photos of wives and girlfriends of enlisted men, topless and with a pledge of support written on their backs.
Battling Bare hopes to gain non-profit status and eventually serve as a conduit for those coping with PTSD, steering them to the proper support groups and resources.

amberh8 10 months agoAs the other ladies said, I don’t get it. My husband has PTSD but I don’t think taking my shirt off and scrawling a message across my back is supportive. Being there for him, helping him when he needs it…all way more supportive. This is like that Boobs for the Troops facebook page. A chance to be sleazy.

Connie J. 10 months agoI have a spouse with PTSD and I am confused by the intent of this campaign. These semi-nude poses convey what message? I can take my shirt off? How about something that tells us that we’re not alone. That you feel our pain when we worry about our spouse. My husband has no emotions, worries about death (daily), battles with police, and is on constant watch everyday. Oh, wait, let me take my shirt off and take a crappy picture…I feel much better now. Seriously…???

sylph 10 months agoI understand the sentiment, but I agree with other comments when I say the messages would have been stronger if they had been individually personalized by the women. With respect to the photographers, I also think that some (Not all) of the photographs are not striking or visually appealing, which is not meant as a critique of the women. Anyway, I like the project, effort, and motives, but I feel there could have been some more changes implemented to support the message more.

I personally am not impressed by this type of support. Also, why do they all have the same message written on their skin? I think it would be more insightful to have each woman “bare” a more personal message.
I am the wife of a retired US vet, I think this could have been done more tactful. -

Davine S. 10 months agoI’m hearting this for the intent behind it, but erikac and Lizbeth R are right on the money: it could have been so much more powerful. The nakedness doesn’t add anything to the message; it just muddles it - as evidenced by Gavon’s “titillation for a good cause” caption. “Titillation” should have no place in a discussion about PTSD. Women are frequently the targets for PTSD-based violence, so what does stripping their clothes off communicate? “I’ll make myself even more vulnerable in support of your condition, darling”? They end up looking like myspace photos, and it’s drawing attention away from the actual subject. I support these women and their spouses. PTSD is a horrible state (I know someone who has it), and awareness needs to be raised. I just don’t think this is the best way to do it.

Lizbeth R. 10 months agoI can’t quite figure out what bothers me so much about this. In a way I kinda get what they’re trying to do, but the way they’re putting out their message is all wrong. This seems more of a self-gratification type photo, rather than bringing awareness. And as a military wife who has been on the receiving end of PTSD, I can certainly tell you there are better ways to get help and information. This is something I would never do. :/
