Shaun White Fails To Medal In Halfpipe Event, Will Leave Sochi Empty-Handed

The heavily favored snowboarding icon comes in fourth place.

Shaun White, the 27-year-old two-time gold medalist who was expected to dominate the snowboarding halfpipe competition, failed today to even medal in the event. It was White's only competition at the Olympics, and he'll now leave Sochi empty-handed.

It was a doomed effort from the beginning...

On his first of two runs, White attempted a "yolo" and wiped out, sliding down the halfpipe on his back.

He tried to follow up the failed trick with a "double cork," but again wound up slamming into the edge of the wall and falling flat.

Although his second run was free of any further collapses, the damage was already done.

White scored a 90.25, putting him in fourth place.

Switzerland's Iouri "iPod" Podladtchikov took gold, with Japan's Ayumu Hirano and Taku Hiraoka respectively taking silver and bronze.

"I'm disappointed," White said. "I hate the fact I nailed it in practice, but it happens. It's hard to be consistent."
