Do I believe she said it? Yes
Do I believe she said it within earshot of a black person? No I don’t I’m from Oklahoma. My Grandfather used to talk like that, all the time, and it wasn’t to be hateful, he was actually a really jolly person and (*shock* *gasp*) not a monster, or a bad or evil person, just a person that was raised in an environment of institutionalized racism. However, in the presence of black people he was very warm and sweet and welcoming to them. He had black friends who stopped him in the streets and bulls***ed for hours (it was really annoying going any place with him). Another thing that bothers me about the quote is that the plaintiff would have to be a savant on the level of rainman to be able to remember a quote that long verbatim with no mistakes. As a matter of fact, given the fickle nature of actual memory, it’s possible that she was angry with Paula, heard something mildly racist, and embellished it in her mind until it was a crackling electric firestorm of racism. It’s also possible that she positively believes now that the incident took place in exactly the manner she envisions it in her mind. The more you learn about human memory the less you trust it (which is disturbing in it’s own right) google “Satanic Panic” for a demonstration of the power of false memory. (I’m not excusing Paula, to be honest I just kind of assumed she was always racist… I’ve never really been a fan.)
