I mean, I may be a little naive, but when is $150k not a lot of money? Both of my parents combined had less that $100k a year and four kids. We never went without food or clothes and I consider us to be upper middle class. With that being said, I did grow up in a small town in the midwest. But I think anywhere you live, $150k would be a nice paycheck. I can’t even imagine what my parents would have been able to do with an extra $50,000 per year. I definitely wouldn’t be in debt with student loans.

Hey IceManD, being poor does not take away the right to have a family. More people, more food.

To those stating that $150K p/year isn’t “rich”… Please take a moment to consider how many people on this planet might disagree with you on that.

It seems many people do not understand what this graphic is showing, nor why it is fascinating.  You might have heard that income inequality has been in the news lately. Just a little, so it’s understandable if you missed it (hint: sarcasm). With this in mind let’s see what’s going on here. The trends are all the same. The poorer you are, the more your income is taken up by unavoidable necessities of being a living human. Eating (at home); driving to work; housing (OK, the trend’s not so clear here); paying for lights, heat, and water; health care; these are all bottom-line unavoidable expenses, and in EACH CASE, the poor pay far higher percentage of their total income. Meanwhile, “luxuries” like eating out, saving for retirement, and paying for top quality education (which you want to do due to right wing tax-revolt politics destroying public education funding)—all these things, that every American should have a right to expect to be able to do, all these things are further and further out of reach for people who make less than the not-very-high-$150K.  And news flash: adding total taxes paid will not make the picture more equitable; in fact, just the opposite. Second news flash: this picture is going to continue to get worse until Republican policies get more widely recognized for the national disaster that they have proved to be.

What percentage of their income do they spend on Federal Income Tax, Medicare, and Social Security? What does it look like when you add $150k-$250k,$250k-$1M, and $1M+?

    • Dakota Jake 9 months ago

What percentage of their income is spent on taxes - federal income tax + Social Security + Medicare? What about for income earners of $150k-$200k, $200k-$1M, and $1M+?

What options accounting for 80 to 90 percent of food expenses are not covered under “at home” and “restaurants, etc.”?

    • chaseh5 9 months ago

      150k isnt rich, it’s well-off. 300k is rich.

Not sure this quite rates as fascinating. Most stuff is similar.

Sorry, but calling people who make 150k “rich” is a bit weak. That’s upper middle-class in SF. Yeah, it’s more than most make, but when I think “rich”, I think 200 or 300k+/yr. These samples are so close as to make them worthless.

      The poor eat a lot!
Maybe they wouldn’t be so poor if they ate less! #peoplewhodonotunderstandpercentages

What about the people that make $70,000 to $149,999?
