Try being an immigrant in any country. I met a cab driver trained as an electrical engineer. It’s really common for people with incredible knowledge to end up in low level tasks when them immigrate. We’re talking brain surgeons who now work in data entry type of thing.

My liberal arts degree has actually HELPED me tremendously in finding decent employment. I have a theatre degree and about half of what i learned while obtaining this degree was how to stand out from the crowd in a tough business. I was actually turning down jobs after graduation as i was called back for every one i applied for. Since business is tough all over, ive used the skills learned for auditioning in order to obtain a good desk job that pays my bills and leaves nights and weekends open for rehearsals and movie shoots (both paid and unpaid gigs, of course). So keep your chin up, artsy people! It’s not all necessarily serving and retail in your future.

Why is everyone focusing on the ones with painting or philosophy degrees? There’s one with social services, finance, a few with engineering - where did they go wrong?

Someone has to do those jobs. Unfortunate that those with a higher education get stuck there.

College students please listen!! DO NOT get a degree in philosophy, painting, literature, or any other worthless degree and expect to get any kind of decent job. You’ll be lucky if you can manage to find a job teaching which isn’t all that likely. At least have a fallback plan and do a double major in something else like accounting or something.

    • kea718 11 months ago

For number 1… A degree in painting… What the hell good is that? Thats like getting a job in philosophy. It’s a non-degree. Instead of wasting time in college she should have tried getting her name out there as an artist and working on her artistic talents (if she has any, which I doubt considering she thought going to college for it was a good idea) I don’t feel bad for people who get a degree in a bs field and then wonder why they can’t find a good job. Every artist I’ve met (and I’ve met a bunch in my life) does not have a degree in any art field if they even have a degree at all. s

Ok, let’s be realistic here: We got folks who are bashing these folks who got worthless degrees and no job and the folks who are trying to defend them. The reality is, only an idiot would get a degree in something like philosophy or painting, etc. and expect a job in the field. Sorry, but there is no such thing as “philosophy firms”. Hate to say it, but they brought it upon themselves. I learned a trade. I have a job. I make pretty decent money. Not bad for someone who doesn’t have a “real” degree.

The problem this country has is that its forever linked education with HOW MUCH MONEY can I get out of this?! Degrees in the arts are needed as much as tech skills and street sweepers. I have my degrees in History and English Lit, I also learned to be an Administrative Assistant as a fall back. All the people with smug, ugly comments are bottom of the barrel douches. As for the rest of the countries represented, the closer we’ve become globally, the worst off people are. When the G20 countries sneeze, the rest of the world gets the flu and the 3rd world nations continue to reside in ICU.

I know how they feel. I did a Music Literature degree and I knew it was hopeless before I even graduated. You have to play up your skills with a degree like that. I went into law and then moved to IT as a business analyst. The work is interesting and I’m happy, even if I am just a contractor.

For many liberal arts degrees a Masters is required in order to get into a specific field of work. For example, to be a psychologist an MA is required, an a BA is only good for social work or community support.  I assumed that low value of a liberal arts BA was more of a first world problem, but it seems that it is tough all over.

1/3 of the comments on here are completely; judgmental, smug, presumptive and flat out hateful. You folks to work on a little thing called human sympathy. Oh and a liberal arts degree is NOT useless. It is personally enriching and benefits society. Someone needs to edify the rest of us who hold “real” degrees.

Getting a degree no matter what it is in is great but it’s not a promise.  Universities set up the expectation that some company will hire you and give you good money if you get a degree there. What they should be doing rather than setting people up for being corporate drones is to prepare them to start a business of their own. My advice is to find out what you want to do and get a job in that business and learn the business. Learn from someone else while they are paying you. Then when you are ready go start your own business.  And for heavens sake DO NOT get a student loan. It’s a trap and a form of indentured servitude.

I feel for these people, but honestly, degree in philosophy and religious sciences? What did you expect to happen? If you studied those things with the expectation that that would immediately merit a job/career, then you had it coming. Folks with useful and needed degrees are finding it hard to find work as it is.
