This is the most enlightening article I’ve read today. It illuminates…the pervasive and insidious nature of social media and its uncanny ability to propel minor celebrities to an obscene level of fame. One photo of Gigi Hadid (who?) got 51,700 “likes.” Why? You don’t need to care about these people, but you’d better care about why they’re famous and how they got to be famous.

Interesting how so much of this boils down to language. The lexicon of of sexual identity. Which makes sense. All civil rights movements must first reclaim and define their identities before they can hope to enlighten the rest of us. And sometimes that identity changes over time. Black people became African-American. Some gay people prefer queer. But it can catch you off-guard. You have to keep up. I consider myself well-informed on gender issues, but cisgender I had not heard before. Unless. I mean, Buzzfeed wouldn’t just make something like that up, would they?
